Holly crap!
Ya. it poped up and tried to force uninstall the program after I launched it.

I killed the uninstall. Interesting.

Oh well time to for your edonkey holdouts to convert to emule.

Hmm, so I see three cases of this happening at the same time - which seems logical... sounds like something worth investigating.

The same thing happened to me. Overnet seems to be working as things seem to be downloading but can't connect to search or download anything.

Attempts to download supposed new version failed.

Very strange goings on.

Just perusing through the main webpage. I noticed that the files page and the forums page is down. Maybe it's a server issue? Beyond that, I can't really find anything.

Joined just to say.

This happened some hours ago, so I was hoping Slyck would've known whats up. Even finding 1.4.6 is hard (well it's easy if you look for it).

And now eD2K tells you the servers are down and is trying to uninstall itself. Well, I know you still can get online. Disconnect your internet, start up eD2k, and reconnect.

Seems like Overnet is down, but there are servers that are still up for eD2k.

Whats goin on? I unno, maybe eD2K is throwing in the towel?

I find it strange to think that Overnet is so centralised as to rely on a source (server?) and whenever the source is down, all of Overnet is down. I would imagine this would be a major vulnerability to the Overnet network if this is the case (though I'm likely wrong on this)

Yeah, I can't find anything on this as well... I just know some parts of the offical eDonkey2000 homepage is down which has be believ that this is some sort of server issue.

I can safely say that the eDonkey2000 network servers are doing perfectly fine (I'm on them via eMule) so it must have something to do with the connection between eDonkey2000 clients and the client homepage.

I did what BlissX advised and was able to connect to Overnet and a server, but there are very little users.

just add the edonkey webserver to your peer guardina block list and the client will then run.

They have either really given up or someone has hacked there webservers.

I'm trying to capture the message that there sending to my client. That's trying to tell it to uninstall.

I'll leave it to tom to write the scoop on this.
He's much better at writing than I am.

I noticed a big slowdown when I logged in about 3 hours ago IceCube, the kind of slowdown that come when the site is flooded after a big article...... I'm guessing that a lot of people are looking for info on this..................

Can you check visitor stat history, or is that an admin thing only? Or maybe my brain was just slow after a 13+ hr work day. :x

Either way, If I were you, I'd start digging hard and get the article written up........before Tom wakes up and scoops you

Edit: Has the towel really been thrown in this time?

The thread has only 447 views (plus by now) so it's not the thread. The site has been slow all day and even I don't know why. Maybe there's some sort of issue elsewhere in this problem.

I'll leave this story to Tom as he's better capable of handling something like this.

This could also all be some sort of glitch and it'll clear itself in 24 hours or so. Still, I do find it rather unusual for any client to just fail like this on different peoples machines at the same time. Not even Kazaa ever did this (yet)

by tm,
I just fired up a very old copy of Overnet/eDonkey. Overnet will not connect, though I probably should be able to if I had a known IP address to bootstrap from.

No backdoor uninstall in version v.1.4.3, but I do get this recurring popup:

"There is a known security vulnerability in this version of edonkey. Please upgrade ..."

I assume a firewall block should easily fix that popup :)

As you can see eDonkey is dead :

Also after getting that popup eDonkey uninstall is launched automatically

Crap this is strange... about 6 hours ago it worked fine.
Now keeps saying it's dead.
The thing that sounds strange is that the page that makes announcements for edonkey didn't show anything strange...

And the site doesn't say a thing.

I keep the client on with the strange pop up running and it started connecting and downloading from mmm GOAway group... P2P Master Server.

But I see 3000 or some connected clients... and downloads very slowly... almost dead.

Anyone knowing something please enlight us.

Here is a trick to get on . . .

1 - block internet access (disconnect/block with NAV)
2 - load ED
3 - turn access back on and select a server

note : the server list will be messed up but they are up and running.

Is it beer-thrity yet???

If people are having problems with edonkey now might be a good time to try emule...

Especially with protocol obfuscation now included there has never been a better time to try it out!

Still would like to know what's going on with eDonkey though :(

Makes you wonder if they can do that remotely to your closed source client, what else can they do? If there was any trust left in that client I am sure it's all gone now. eMule is working fine, ed2k is fine, emule will hash your files and you won't feel a thing.
