Do you really think that eMule is protected by some kind of Anti RIAA shield or something ? Sooner or later RIAA will try with eMule too so stop posting ''get emule, is better...'' this forum is about eDonkey.

This is really strange. How can MetaMachine remotely shut off millions of clients?

ed2000 is closed source and dead, emule is open source and alive. You work it out.

Yeah, emule is better, it still works!

No body knows what Metamachine can and can't do to the eDonkey client apart from Metamachine.

The really worrying thing is what they have been doing to the clients that people haven't noticed! Sending list of shared files etc...

It's closed source so you have to go with what they do.
Should really think of something to put here.

another example was morpheus getting the boot on fastrack remember that was big news at the time

I've suspected that a Metamachine backdoor was built into the program for a while now. Looks like Overnet has finally kicked the bucket.

Nobody outside MM can review the sourcecode of any ED2000 client derivate for hidden surprises.
MM is under heavy legal and financial pressure.
All ***lite versions of closed source p2p clients are hacked by unknown persons.

How dubious could it ever be ?
Right.

This is what I read from the shareprovider forums

Apparently the client is still working, but you need to bypass it.
the instructions are given above in this same post, however people are saying to look out for a file named "full.exe" (in the ed2k folder) which is a trojan.

Also there apparently seems to be a uninstall_edonkey200_ right next to the (legal)uinstall_edonkey2000_

apprently, the client is working fine, if u disconnet, load it up fully and connect again!

thx

 I've got edonkey2000 "PRO" and the client is bothering me just as anyone.
If Metamachine was spying through their software, should one go to a lawyer to make a lawsuit for illegal intrusion, data mining and back-raping our connections?

Well this is another step into the totalitarian fascism that's eating the north "saviours of the world" americans.

Now P2P has it's own S11? Hhahaha.

I can understand why people are annoyed at this, and worried about what else has been happening with the eDonkey client.

However, it is not the ed2k network that has been closed just one way of accessing this huge network. Just simply download another client that is not in bed with the RIAA and off you go.

Nobody likes change but sometimes it is a good thing  *cough* emule *cough*

I haven't seen the EULA for the software but I would be surprised if users didn't give their permission for this when they installed it.
I know what you're thinking, punk. You're thinking, 'Did he use six superfluous adjectives or only five?' To tell the truth I forgot myself in all this excitement - but as I deal in English, the most powerful language in the world with subtle nuances that may blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' Well do you punk?

For those that want some back ground to eDonkey closure: http://www.computeractive.co.uk/vnunet/ ... pany-falls

Ah yes Slyk the infamous EULA. How many people actually read any of them when they install software? You may be suprised what they contains.

I wouldn't be suprised if eventually the server software and other clients were coded in such a way that eventually any client identifying itself as eDonkey is blocked thus affecting all of them.

eDonkey 1.4.6 version (the last)

Code: Select all
1. Violation of Copyright and Other Laws When Using eDonkey

PLEASE NOTE THAT METAMACHINE, INC. RESPECTS THE RIGHT OF COPYRIGHT OWNERS AND IS FULLY COMMITTED TO PROTECT THEIR RIGHTS. METAMACHINE, INC. EXPECTS ALL EDONKEY USERS AND EDONKEY WEB SITE USERS TO DO THE SAME. WE, THEREFORE, ASK YOU TO PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION TO AVOID VIOLATING COPYRIGHT LAWS AND REGULATIONS. AS A CONDITION TO USE THE METAMACHINE PRODUCTS AND SERVICES, YOU MUST AGREE THAT YOU WILL NOT USE METAMACHINE TO INFRINGE THE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY OR OTHER RIGHTS OF OTHERS IN ANY WAY. UNAUTHORISED COPYING, DISTRIBUTION, MODIFICATION, PUBLIC DISPLAY, OR PUBLIC PERFORMANCE OF COPYRIGHTED WORKS IS AN INFRINGEMENT OF THE COPYRIGHT HOLDERS' RIGHTS.

YOU SHOULD NOT USE EDONKEY SERVICE TO OBTAIN ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION ABOUT ANY EDONKEY USERS OR TO MODIFY, DELETE OR DAMAGE ANY INFORMATION CONTAINED ON THE PC OF ANY USER CONNECTED TO THE EDONKEY SERVICE. YOU ARE HEREBY PUT ON NOTICE THAT YOU ARE ENTIRELY RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR CONTENT AND FOR ENSURING THAT IT COMPORTS WITH ALL APPLICABLE LAWS, INCLUDING ALL COPYRIGHT AND DATA-PROTECTION LAWS. IN CASE YOU FAIL TO COMPLY WITH LAWS REGARDING COPYRIGHTS OR OTHER INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS AND DATA-PROTECTION, YOU MAY, BY THE RELEVANT AUTHORITIES, BE EXPOSED TO CIVIL AND CRIMINAL LIABILITY, INCLUDING FINES AND JAIL TIME.

2. MetaMachine's Policy Against Child Pornography

We do not want child pornography on the eDonkey Network. You should report any incidents to one of the non-profit organizations dedicated to fight the spread of child pornography. One such organization is at www.cybertipline.com. You can find a list of such organizations on http//www.meldpunt.org/NL/inhope.html.

PLEASE OBSERVE THAT, IN ADDITION TO BEING DISGUSTING, SPREADING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IS A CRIMINAL OFFENCE IN MOST COUNTRIES. IF YOU SHARE CHILD PORNOGRAPHY, YOU RUN THE RISK OF BEING PROSECUTED, FINED OR IMPRISONED. A number of non-profit organizations and individuals are actively seeking out child pornography on the Internet and reporting the incidents to the authorities.

3. MetaMachine's Copyright Infringement Policy

MetaMachine respects and wants to protect the rights of copyright owners. We ask all users to pay special attention to avoid violating copyright laws and regulations. Unauthorized copying, distribution, modification, public display, or public performance of copyrighted works is an infringement of copyright holders' rights. You should be aware that some of the files other eDonkey users designate to share may have been created or distributed without the copyright owners' authorization. Your license to use the eDonkey software and access the eDonkey Network is subject to the condition that you shall not infringe the intellectual property rights of others in any way. MetaMachine will terminate the account of any eDonkey users with repeat copyright infringements.

MetaMachine is technically not able to monitor the information users transmit or store via the eDonkey network. Even if MetaMachine were in the position to monitor the information users transmit or store, which it is not, MetaMachine is not obliged under law to conduct such monitoring. To the contrary, monitoring users in any communications network would amount to an infringement of their privacy. We, however, are required by law, to comply with requests by judicial authorities for information about our users, in accordance with national legislation to safeguard national security, defense, and public security and for the prevention, investigation, detection and prosecution of criminal and civil offences.

The last part is interesting  We, however, are required by law......

To conclude, i think is time to look ahead edonkey is dead just like kazaa, bittorrent is too big to be stopped so the next thing in the RIAA agenda will be eMule for sure, maybe next year or less...

It would be nice to know if MetaMachine/eDonkey, who at one point looked like a less evil and more secure alternative to Sharman/Kazaa, has indeed been spying on it's users.

The EULA should be accessible somewhere on the net, otherwise the edonkey site should have a listed privacy policy.

I suppose all it takes, is one determined person to go read through all of it, and come back with an answer (cough!, cough!, Tom!, cough!)...

I’ve been donkey’s fan for years despite what everyone would say about the speed or other things, it served me great. The day of that client is over, it was over long time ago face it! right from the time when we all would have our suspicions about the weirdness of difference events that would accrue starting from the day of new donkey version been out , and despite all the questions people would have , silence would remain no straight answers would bee given.Right now it’s like beating dead horse,Its time to move on, and let the donkey retired for once and for all.
