Jolly-good-w00t-ness for Overnet.

Tho, looking at the Overnet stats and the ED2K stats makes me wonder about Kad.

Because of this thread I tried overnet again after have left it behind 10 months ago or so in favor of the edonkey client and it seems the overnet user count is going up indeed :)
I also noticed that you get much better speeds on overnet, but overnet finds less sources (because it doesn't connect to the edonkey servers). So now i run mostly overnet to get most of my stuff at rather good speeds (certainly for a p2p network) and every now and then i'll run edonkey to get parts/files overnet can't find.
Overnet gives me 5 minutes after it's started speeds around 100 KBps and more, while edonkey only gives me around 50 KBps (and it must be running longer before you get some speed)

Hope this info can be usefull for some of you guys :)

I second that although I did not leave the client behind. I just used version 1.0.9 (greatest Edonkey2000 version from my own experience) to Overnet 0.52. I don't use that client very much ( Overnet O.52) but when I look at my sources in 1.0.9, almost all of my dl's come from Edonkey's with Overnet in them. Emule will give me some after a long while but not much compared with Edonkey's with Overnet. Long live Overnet aka Flock (before name change).

Strange development when eDonkey are folding to the RIAA. One way or the other something will stop this development either when copywritten content is filtered or when you have to pay for downloads.

I'm not so sure we will ever see a new version of eDonkey2000.

...and do we know for sure that these numbers are accurate? Are they taken from the eD2k client, or from some third-party crawler?

They are taken from the client. And you can't crawl a network that uses a DHT as its sole organizing structure. You have to estimate your user count based on the density of the DHT around your user hash which is exactly what the eDonkey client does.

Who cares, could be back down where it was later today or even in a week or so. As we have already often seen with other networks major spikes in a network's population does not tend to last long. Likely someone has been promoting overnet as a safe network to conduct piracy over, that it is less monitored or not being actively monitored for such activity. Or maybe people are installing it on comprimised or easily accessible systems, which can and does happen with other p2p applications such as kazaa.

Whatever the reason, like I said who really cares?

It won't easily die cause of the decentralized structure. It's not like just taking some servers down like they did with Napster...

Have you ever thought of the 1mil people using overnet? Every network has someone who cares about the network.

I would imagine that somebody just added an extra zero to the end. Think 860,160.
