Not getting the speeds I think I should be...

Postby 06MS6 » Mon Mar 28, 2011 11:31 am

Hey everyone. I use grabit and have a subscription to giganews. My ISP is Comcast. Could anyone tell me why I am only downloading at 1.5mbs? I had Comcast send someone today to check my internet speeds, and they did find some complications with the wiring. He did a speed test with my computer and supposedly I'm getting 22mbs when I'm only paying for 10! If this is the case, why can't I download nzb's at this speed? When I first begin a download, it shoots up to about 5mbs, then goes down steadily at 1.5mbs.

Thanks!

Comcast and others only guarantee ( if they even do that ) the speed between your cable modem and their headend.

downloading at 1.5mbs

1.5 MBps = 12 Mbps
Comcast:
Download speeds up to 15 Mbps with PowerBoost®

When I first begin a download, it shoots up to about 5mbs, then goes down steadily at 1.5mbs.

That would be Comcasts "PowerBoost"

to elaborate on what Grym said, clients report speeds in bytes per second. ISPs talk about bits per second. so, what your client calls 1.5 is what comcast calls 12, as there are 8 bits to a byte.

it's part of what makes them so Comcastic.
