New (personal) download speed records!!!

Hit 2.79MB/s = 22.32Mbps down while on the Xubuntu 8.04 alternate i386 ISO torrent :D

And this while the other machine was downloading packages for the Xubuntu 8.04 upgrade, so that number doesn't even represent all my bandwidth.

Interesting facts:
- My connection is marketed (sold) as a 12mbps one. That means it's currently almost doubling what the commercials say. Needless to say, my ISP is not Comcast
- The same connection regularly "fails" speed tests. I once got 20.something Mbps down from one, but most times I get something odd in the 3 - 5Mbps range. The point I'm making is that (depending on your ISP) you may actually have to resort ot P2P to see what your connection can really do. Given the current throttling rage, that's rather ironic
- Also, I hit 563kB/s down on the ISP's newsservers - 9 connections across 5 servers - last week, another personal best

I'm straight, but I LOVE COX ;). Premier account, $56.95/mth <-- that part is a problem :(

US broadband problem? What US broadband problem?

As usual, Scandinavian users, FiOS users, etc. are welcome to blow me away with 30+Mbps stories, lol

Some of us don't have have that kind of speed available to us and don't like it it when those that do flaunt it. :pissedoff: Image

I only have 1.5 Mbps(and for awhile had 3.0) which is just fine. I don't need to download a movie or ISO in 2 minutes. My problem is with the upwidth which is only 256kbps. A ludicrous speed this day and age in broadband. Fucking AT&T. :pissedoff:

Chill out. Look at it this way: the faster someone else's connection is, the faster/more they can upload to you and others, who can then propagate the favor to still other users. That's the beauty of sharing and P2P - a gain for one is a gain for all so jealousy is largely meaningless.

I for one am always happy to see anything *.jp, *fios*, *.edu or *.se in my torrent peer list, because I know they're gonna flood my connection, even though they're faster than me.

So be happy :)

As for upload speed, I spent 2 years having to limit mine to 10KB/s. Yeah you read that right. Previous to that I'd been at 45KB/s (this made the good people at PureTnA really happy, lol). Guess how easy ratio maintenance is with only 10 up?

In other words, I've spent a while in the doldrums too, so you're not alone.

Im not in MrFredPFL's league, but my absolute highest ive ever got was about 180KBps via usenet. That was baout a year ago, now i cant even top 150KBps because the single phone line from the main exchange to the village where i live hasnt been upgraded in decades and more people in my village are using broadband, so the contention is something stupid like 200:1 and still rising.

I've got roughly 12Mbps down.

It's the up speeds that piss me off. It's barely 1Mbps.

£18 a month with no restrictions of any description is pretty good though.

Sad thing is with Sasktel, here in Saskatchewan, you are 'supposed' to get 1.5 down...more like 800 down, but we all know about that. Through Giganews, hitting 600-650 down.

Upload WAY different story.... may as well have a 64k modem, cuz that's your upload. I thought it was 128, or 256...but no, even my FTP server caps out at 65ish.

Farting bob I thought you were with Be/02?

Like senseispab I get that but due attenuation and weather its all over the place, good days 11-12mbs, average 10mbs once in a blue moon tweaking router with firmware 14mbs but is not stable.

I was briefly when i lived up in london, now im back in the wilderness and cant get anything reliable or fast. Half the time its as slow as dial up, i generally do my downloading late at night because otherwise its infuriatingly slow.

That's amazing :)

Over my wireless, sitting in the living room with a signal strength of only 27%, running Windows Vista, on a Dell laptop, my server on the same line sucking up bandwidth, the gf watching old episodes of CSI on Veoh over the same wireless, a Linksys router.

Yet, even with all of those obstacles against me...

You guys suck. :P

Yep, and mine's growing, lol

New record yet again: 3.24MB/s = 25.92Mbps

This means my line speed is now more than twice as fast as advertised

Ono causes memory leaks.

That being said, I am provisioned for a 5/512 cable line. I regularly break 650-700kb/s down over wireless to my router on a PIII laptop :)
