Spyware Removal Guide

Postby red duck » Sun Oct 17, 2004 5:13 am

Q: What is Spyware/Adware?
A: This is malicous code that sends information about your habits to the companies that infested your pc with Spyware/Adware.

Q: I don't care if they know about my habits.
A: If that is not a problem for you than consider the fact that spyware/adware can noticably slow your computer down, and even disable some apps from working properly....

This is the place where you can learn the basics of protecting your PC against spyware.

The first program you will need is Spyware Blaster. Download, install and run it.

First thing to do when you run it is to update the definitions.

Now you need to enable its protection mechanisms.

Spyware Blaster is different from other Spyware/Adware removers because it focuses on preventing the spyware from being installed in the first place.

The next program on the list is Ad-Aware. This can be used in conjunction with Spyware Blaster and Spybot SD to supplement their abilities.Ad-Aware

Once again you need to update the definitions.

Then scan your PC with it. Removing any malicious objects it finds.

Another program that works great is Spybot - Search and Destroy

In my opinion this program works great in combination with Ad-aware. First thing to do after installation is to update it. Then it is good to have it immunize you computer. This works like Spyware Blaster, stopping bad programs being intalled.

And at the end scan you computer with it.

HijackThis is another excellent program for removing malware, but unfortunatly it doesn't know the difference between "good" and "bad" things. It simply detects program based off their characteristics, this is good for finding unknown malware, but means it returns a high number of false positives. That is why it is advisable for you to know what you are doing when using it. Here is a tutorial that helps you to deal with Hijack This.

Enjoy!

Nice guide. I already saw it on your forums. :P

I do have one recommendation though. If you would resize the pics down a little bit it would look better and wouldn't set the pages off. Just a suggestion.

Good stuff RD.

If a Mod could sticky this it'd be great. And this will be perfect to link to when it comes to answering some questions for the Slyck FAQ.

EDIT: RD, check the thread for this at 666.

Up to you. If you can get them smaller with them still being readable, then go for it.

Nice going RD! :D

I'd recommend re-wording slightly though, as it sounds from your explanation that you need to use SpyBlaster and then Ad-Aware. Probably best to clarify each one is an alternative which may be used alone, or in combination with another.

Great guide though! :D

great guide! :D
If you don't I'd make a few recommendations, too. Fon't take it the wrong way, it's just that it's great, and worth expanding upon.

First, I'd show how to update Spybot, like you did with Spyware Blaster and Ad-Aware, rather than just mentioning it slightly inthe middle of a paragraph. It risks not being seen.

I'd also note that the applications need to be updated regularly, in case someone is not aware of that.

Also, maybe a note on TeeTimer, so that users kow what's trying to get installed along with Spybot.

Finally, a note on "safe mode" and "system restore" for XP users.

Just increased your workload, haven't I? ;) Well.. maybe I can find the time during the week to wirte it up myself.

It is a very nice guide RD. If you could shrink the pictures a lil bit it would be all the more impressive.

A very helpful guide indeed.

Just thought I'd update this thread a little by posting an address which does a professional analysis of HiJackThis log files.

It's for people who are too lazy to go through all the info posted at http://computercops.biz/HijackThis.html ;)

Anyway, the address is http://www.hijackthis.de/index.php?langselect=english

Hope it helps.
