Firefox Update 33 Opens Firefox As Black Screen

Postby sunnyd » Thu Oct 16, 2014 8:50 am

When I started Firefox this morning, it had updated to v 33, and unfortunately it opened as a just a black screen. I uninstalled it, and reinstalled it, and it had the same issue, so I did some research.

Here is the resolution I found per the link below:

Open Firefox in safe mode...
With Firefox fully closed, you can hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox to enter safe mode as it opens.

A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset).

If Firefox is visible, go ahead and disable Firefox's use of hardware acceleration as a workaround for a possible graphics card driver software incompatibility.

To do that, go to the "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"

That will be in effect the next time you exit and start Firefox back up.

Here's the link where I found that...

It worked fine for me, and all is well now, bookmarks etc. are all still there.

I had the same issue with the FF update yesterday. In my case the problem seemed to be related to the Classic Theme Restorer add-on. Disabling that fixed it for me.
