Windows Explorer keeps crashing

Postby gbswales » Sun Oct 21, 2012 6:50 am

I have an annoying problem with Windows Explorer (not IE) which keeps crashing for no apparent reason. It usually restarts OK but is nonetheless very annying and when it happens it then seems more likely to re-occur more frequently in the same session. It happened on two previous installations but the first time I ended up with a Fresh windows install but it takes me days to get the computer back to my normal working arrangment. I have improved this by moving C:\ onto a 128GB SSD but unfortunately I lost the last back up that I had prior to the problem developing, so restoring from back up not likely to help as the fault will likely still be in the back up. The other previous time it happened was a couple of years ago and then I replaced two hard drives, SATA cables and the Motherboard (most people pointed to a fault with HD's or the SATA controller) Each time it was fixed it worked OK for months before happening again!

What I have tried so far:-

1) checking hard drives by taking each one out, one at a time with no difference

2) I couldnt test the SSD that way but it is new and was not in the computer the previous time this happened - so unlikely culprit I think

3) I have changed default file display to not show image based icons - this has improved it a little but not eliminated it and, as I have a huge number of photos and videos with numeric file names it is a less than ideal work around.

4) It happens more often when there a few windows open or where I am 2-3 levels into the folder structure but this may be perceptional because it sometimes happens the first time I open Windows Explorer

SYSTEM DETAILS

I have an AMD dual core processor

4GB Ram

2 x 2TB hard drives, 1 x 128GB SSD, 1x 250GB Hard drive (System Back up) and a 3TB go flex usb drive usually connected. I have tried with out this. Also my perception is that it doesnt happen when these are in use (though usually I would be using an internal drive at the same time)

Any suggestions for fixing would be really appreciated

Re: Windows Explorer keeps crashing

i just found something interesting

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000960.htm

"Is this file a spyware, trojan, or virus?

The ntdll.dll file included with Microsoft Windows is not spyware, a trojan, or a virus. However, like any file on your computer it can become corrupted by a virus or trojan. antivirus programs can detect and clean this file if it has become infected. Because this file is part of Windows users should never delete or remove this file if they think it is infected, let the antivirus program handle it."

may be helpful.

Since you have done clean installs, I'd not suspect that the problem is actually from the ntdll.dll. And I would assume you have already run chkdsk.

One of the most common reason for Windows Explorer crashes (on any OS) is due to 3rd party explorer extension add-ons (right click options), that other programs have added to your right click menu which are not Microsoft extensions, and they can cause the exact issue you are having.

One way to determine which ones are added that you may not be aware of, is to run a shellex program and determine which ones are actually installed, and start disabling them one at a time to see if the problem can be eliminated.

I've used this one before, and it does not install, it just views and displays the existing content on your pc.

Since you continue to have the problem each time you reload your programs on a fresh install, it seems that this could be a possibility for you. There is a lot of other information out there if you wish to research further, on how 3rd party add-ons can cause crashes in windows explorer. One of my friends had a version of WinRar that seemed to be the culprit after we ruled out everything else. Uninstalled that program, chose a different version, and the problem went away. But, it's not always as easy as that.

Good luck!

Edit: This topic would be better suited in software discussion, as it may result in more conversation/suggestions there, than in Newsgroups. Perhaps Fred can move it there.

agreed, and done.

i don't know what is causing this, but i'd far sooner suspect software than hardware. i'd be very surprised if it turned out to be a hardware issue.

i'd agree that checking any additions to right-click context menus (by disabling them) would be a good place to start.

In my experience, the main cause of explorer crashes are HDD problems .... though it seems that you've all but ruled those out.

Another cause I've seen commonly is related to the Windows thumbnailing process, usually upon entering a folder that contains video files, which can also be related to codec issues. Are these crashes related to folder access? If so, what are the folder contents?

After that, I'd look at shell extensions, etc and disable any such non-standard extensions.

Also, check the error logs (both system and application) for any errors in the minutes leading up to an explorer crash. Often it's another, less noticeable, issue immediately preceding the crash that is the cause.

This is a very common problem. Especially on larger folders and folders with multiple video filetypes. Making sure that your codecs are proper and reducing the folder size should help.

4) It happens more often when there a few windows open or where I am 2-3 levels into the folder structure but this may be perceptional because it sometimes happens the first time I open Windows Explorer

Based on what gbswales indicated above, I believe all of the suggestions we have provided will be good ones to try. The helix codec is often one of the culprits that will crash windows explorer with a mouseover on an .avi file, or other video format.
