foxit - now with compulsory toolbar?

Postby MrFredPFL » Wed Feb 17, 2010 9:24 pm

i went to upgrade my foxit the other night to the newest version - only to see that it wants to install a toolbar, and there appears to be no way to refuse it. can anyone who has upgraded confirm this? yes, i don't like acrobat, but i don't like toolbars either, and i am not impressed with anyone who wants to force me to install theirs.

The only workaround I found so far was to let it install, then immediately go to add/remove programs and it appears there separate, so you are able to fully uninstall it then.

I'm glad it worked out for you, there was no way to tell it "NO, do NOT install", that was the only solution I found. I also hate toolbars.

Edit: Lol, or were you saying goodbye to Foxit because you did not let the toolbar install at all, and you no longer will use Foxit at all? I may have read your "goodbye" wrong there, thinking you just meant the toolbar.

yes, you misread. foxit is no longer my PDF viewer. let me uncheck a box before it installs, or else no thanks. i was already unimpressed with the automatic update check and its splash screen that couldn't be disabled. sorry, guys, but i'm not impressed with your attitude toward your end users.

I thought perhaps I did misread that. It was not "deal breaker" because you broke the deal and removed the toolbar after, in your case it was just a NO deal, NO way, not gonna do it at all, lol. Even Java wants to install a toolbar when it updates, but it does have the "option" of saying no like it should. Way too many software programs try to get you to install the toolbars which is SO annoying. Bad Foxit!

What version are you using gavilan? The toolbar started as an add on with updates after version 3.0.1120 (If I remember correctly). Generally with Foxit if you were on a 2.xx version, it would update to the next 2.xx version before it goes to 3.xx. Sumatra is also another alternative for Adobe and Foxit.

Strange.... but glad you had no issue with it, and if it does not appear in add/remove programs either then consider yourself lucky, as this has been an issue on several pcs that I worked on, there was no way to avoid installing the toolbar even using help, check for updates, or custom.

Nope, no toolbar in Add/Remove either, although the version reported there is 3.1.3.1030. Strange.

I just did a fresh install from scratch. The option for the toolbar was after I pressed "install", a new windows poped up (looks the same thou so you may not notice its accually a new window) and it had 3 options. the top being the install the toolbar option, checked by default.

I updated 4 pcs and ran into the same issue of "no way out" but apparently from what I am reading here, I am guessing that this must depend on your popup/ad settings, browser settings, security level, etc., which are practically different on every pc. This could be an easy explanation of why some are having issues, and some aren't. For some people, not all the windows may be popping up to see, to choose the options. I did see other complaints about the toolbar issue in a Google search I just did.

More reasons to switch to Nitro .pdf reader....

Foxit Reader Stumbles Into Version 4

http://download.cnet.com/8301-2007_4-20 ... inesArea.0

Foxit Reader has long been the most visible Windows alternative to Adobe Reader, but in the latest update this popular freeware falters. How far it's stumbled depends on how annoyed you get at installation shenanigans. Granted, there are some useful new features added, but where the jump from version 2 to version 3 cut bloat while adding in a few features, version 4 adds some new features while also throwing some unpleasant curveballs your way.

Over a half-day of use, Foxit's performance varied. Mostly it would open PDFs and maneuver within them easily; occasionally it would be sluggish and momentarily unresponsive. Foxit still remains lighter on your system resources than Adobe Reader, but given the improving performances of online and in-browser editing tools and the strong debut of the free Nitro PDF Reader, it's hard to recommend Foxit enthusiastically.
