Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes like Windows Updates and interrogating your PC etc To get it back: Click Start then Run and type "gpedit.msc" without quotes.This opens the group policy editor. Then go to: Local Computer Policy then Computer Configuration then Administrative Templates then Network then QOS Packet Scheduler and then to Limit Reservable Bandwidth. Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab i.e."By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default." So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.It works on Win 2000 as well

That's fine...but my XP on this machine doesn't have the 'network' tab and of course then nothing underneath it. This is XP Pro...so, not sure where they would be getting this from.

another way to get to it would be:

Start -> Run
Type 'mmc' (without quotes)

the management console should appear
then choose File -> Add/Remove snapin -> Add

Pick 'Group Policy Object Editor' and click Add.

Total horseshit.

That settings in no way acts as is described in the article. Windows does not reserve 20% all the time.

That other linked post/article is horseshit too, all it shows is setting up a port forward.

Or put another way, it doesn't use the reserved bandwidth except when it needs to. You would have to be pretty lucky to be able to max-out a broadband connection 24/7. I get the impression this advice was written during the dialup era.

Well even if it used 20% of the available bandwidth part of the time, being able to use your bandwidth 24/7 on your own is better than having windows use it sometimes.

As far as the other article, you are entitled to your opinion, but however it has helped some users. Just because it hasn't helped you doesn't mean that the sky is falling or that it is horseshit. Just because there was a technical error in the message, doesn't make it horseshit either. Think before you speak.

If you look close at the "downloads" on that link, you will see that the number of actual downloads for all "the tricks" are only one per each. I personally would not post something for others that is posted on a blogspot link, which by quick review, suggests that there is not much traffic doing testing for much of anything there. I also think the fact that they are using a MS logo is pretty lame. Perhaps they are new, but that is irrelevant, and this is just my opinion, but I would look closer at facts first on a website before I posted it for others as a reliable source.

and just because you found an inaccurate story interesting doesn't make it valuable either ;)

Second url on your last post does not work, it's a blank page, and I still only see one download in each category almost 36 hours later for all the tricks on that page, in your original post.

Someone removed the http://feedjit.com page . If someone would like to put it back, that would be great. But anywho, it was probably amazing.it since it was their traffic feed page when you first opened it. (would allow you to edit and whatnot) This is what happens when you put something up on a forum, it is removed sometimes by the author on their side as amazing.it seems to have deleted the page. They really shouldn't have b/c the live stats posed no threat to them as it only provided stats about the site. There were no known security holes in live stat and it has been online for quite some time now. So, if you don't all know by now, this website is heavily monitored by many places. Pirate on.
