I'm going to do it, I'm going to install windows 7

Thats right, I'm bored, I can't go flying right now, my bike is broken and I just got a box of IBM think pads.

These laptops will never been used for anything.. I think they are like 1.2 ghz not faster than 1.5 at best.
So I think they are the perfect target for windows 7 to see how long it take's to install and to
see it works any better than xp.

Waiting for the latest RC to finishes downloading is like watching paint dry.
but this should be the final version they are shipping later this year.
The disk image is 2.36 gig's.. so It will fit on a single dvd..

Well 2 min's left in the download.. I'll add to this message after I get down with the install.

Hi Zbeast...
Just curious if you are going to use IE8 with your windows 7...
The reason that i ask is that i've been holding off trying IE8 until i get some kind of feedback as to whether it is worth a crud or not...
IE7 was just awful.... >_<

Thanks !

IE8 comes with Windows 7.

IE8 is pretty much the same as IE7.
They've just added "Accelerators" as they like to call them.
Which is an extra selection when you right click on a web page and the standard ones are; translate and map.

Would be interesting to see if it can run okay on a 1.2-1.5 ghz computer

I have been using it aws a virtual machine in VB, and its pretty good. the toolbar takes a bit to get used to. from what ive seen, your thinkpads should be able to run it ok.

I did.. I'm not impressed.

Well my windows 7 install is done and i'm impressed on how fast the install went.
Even tho the machine i'm installing it on sucks..

I rooted around in the box of laptops till I found the worse one.
A ibm think pad 900 mhz with only 512 megs of ram but an 80 gig hd..

Windows 7 gives you 2 install choices.
one where it will try to upgrade the current os to windows 7.
it's been said this only works with Vista not XP so I didn't try it or the second method
Where it will save all your personal settings in a separate folder, "windows old" and then you can then copy
manually the files you want to save where you want to save them.
this does not save installed applications. All of those are deleted.
I recommend that you back up yourself any data or programs you want to save.
The disk was 75% full with applications and data so I though this was a good test.
I chose the second option.

Base OS install 75 min's, it took about another hour for patches to be downloaded,
This is great.. it takes about 3 hours to install windows xp with all the drivers and updates crap.
So I have to say good job Microsoft. It founds all the necessary drivers buy itself.
Linksys wifi card, ibm hardware drivers, and sound chip drivers.
They also included as part of the "update" windows media center. A Xbmc like software.
I have yet to get this "feature" to work.. it keeps saying that it does not have drivers to something
to play the videos you click on.

If you like tv.. the windows media center thing could be good. it clams that you can watch tv programs
over the internet. I'll let you know if I ever get it working.

Anyway back to widows 7... even on this lump of a computer the program feels fast.
Not really faster than xp, but works well with little slow down.
The new ui takes a little getting use to.

one short coming, if you have an external drive that has a lot of files on it. be prepared to wait.
windows 7 rather than just opening the drive scan's the disk so I can show you in a more
graphical way the contents of that drive. I'll check to see if I can turn that feature off.
it took 3 mins to open my little 250 gig external drive.. I had some folders on that drive that had
hundreds of images. Clicking on one of those folders generated an "corrupted folder error".
Checking the drive on a different computer generated no such error.

Is windows 7 what you should be running on your real under powered computer?
ya, but if your going to buy a netbooks and expect it to run as well as a 2.5 ghz intel i7 no
your dreaming.

I installed both emule and utorrent and both seem to work fine.
I would have installed vuze... but with only 512 meg of ram and such a slow processor.
That program would have been imposable to run. Java don't you know.
