Legitimate XP Home keys won't work

Postby gangstarr » Wed Apr 08, 2009 1:42 pm

I've just reformetted my pc and decided to enter a legit product key as I want to get stuff like media player 11 and 4od (neither of which I seemed to be able to get working on the "free" edition I had installed from a while back.)

Problem is is that neither of the 2 legit product keys i've got will work?

1 came with my acer laptop and the other came with my old dell system. (I don't use either system anymore. The acer is about 2 years old and the dell just over 3)As I haven't used xp home in a while (prefered pro) it's not possible that they have some how expired is it?

Is there anything I can do without actually having to go buy another copy of xp? I wouldn't be that happy doing that anyway cos it seems I can't even get the darned thing to work when I do have legit keys!

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Phone up MS and they will usually send you a new one. Its likely something to do with the licneces being OEM, may be tied to the original hardware. I dont know exactly how XP handles OEM licences though.

If you prefer to use XP pro, and you are able to obtain a copy of that (if all else fails for you), I have info that you can use to make it genuine. Just send me a pm.

Edited: My bad, do not want to feel the wrath of Fred
Edited 2nd time: I won't get the wrath of Fred, cuz what you said was not there to be read, when I read. :-p
/me removes the  face and knows that it DID get fixed later, and NOW it's there

sunnyd, might want to remove that link, against forum rules to post cracks. Or leave it there and feel the wrath of Fred!

I use hacks with a legitimate OEM version of Win XP. It was a lot less hassle than balancing an old desktop on my lap in order to read the sticker to an MS employee over the phone whilst straining over my reading glasses to enter a code in order to retreive and enter another code, etc, etc. Trouble is, once a PC's hardware has been updated the original activation code supplied with it no longer works on any machine. You don't notice this until it becomes necessary to activate Windows again for whatever reason

Oh and contrary to popular belief, bypassing the activation code has not stopped me from downloading Windows updates direct from MS' website.

And to think that I still have three unopened retail copies of XP Pro.

Buy it or crack it yourself. You won't be getting any help here.

Another problem could be - that issue of the CD Key is designed to be install specific. What that means is that the cdkey will not work except with a certain install (with a certain disc) of Windows. HP/Compaq was notorious for this. Somebody drops off the computer with the key on the side of the case, and they tell you to wipe it, and thus you do. You notice the key is for XP Home - SP2. Well, you have one of these discs kicking around, so when you go to reinstall and enter the key - it won't work. What you really needed is the CD that came with the computer, because that key is linked to the special HP/Compaq version of Windows. Then the person tells you that they never got a CD with the computer, then you find out that the CD was ON the machine and needed to be burnt off the hard drive (like they couldn't just eat the 2 cents for a friggin' disc and ship it with the machines!). You call into MS and they tell you that you NEED that install to work with that CD key.

Next step: Hang up in disgust - put in your trusty copy of XP Pro...install and crack. Works every time.

Those OEM versions are generally not transferable to other machines.
Buy a copy of XP and install it on what ever you want.

I'm speaking legally not technically.

I explained I had transferred the hard drive from an old PC to a new one and the tech support guy at MS had no objection to giving me a new key, even though it was clearly an OEM version of Windows. They only object if you try to run a single user license on more than one machine at the same time.

Hmm...lucky you.

MS rep told me to contact HP for a Windows CD. I wanted to strangle her... :P

If I remember correctly u can bypass all that harassment of the machine needing to check if its genuine by using win rar and disassembling the install.exe and just installing the codecs+media player app's inside the installer. The rest is the crappy genuine windows check crap. And of course u have to download the redistributable for media player. I never have and never will install WGA on my systems. I am content with auto updates only.

Hi, i have an authentic serial key for windows xp home edition. I have tried to install it several times with different xp home cd's that have different service pack versions. Is there any way to check which cd version I need for it? Thanks

just do a search for xp no activation and you don't need then keys and all that stuff. :D
Also when the rules say no links, they mean like direct download links. They didn't ever intend to include such phrases as :pirate: "search thepiratebay" :pirate:

As soon as XP is updated the original serial becomes useless for activation purposes. You need the original install CD(s) that it came with. (Mine is on seven separate discs which have to be installed in sequence!) Once activated you shouldn't need to activate again no matter many times you update.
