So whats a good program for data-recovery?

Postby SwordOfZork » Sun Aug 17, 2008 1:19 am

So, Slycksters: I like coming here to ask computer related questions every now and then since there are so many helpful and well-informed users on this site.

Long story short: A friend of mine accidentally started formatting the wrong hard drive, but then immediately stopped when he realized the mistake. So, there should still be a ton of data recoverable on the drive, even though its recognized as not being formatted.

So, whats your favorite data recovery program? I haven't used one in years, personally. I just thought I'd get some opinions to throw at him.

Try the latest version of Ubuntu, it will see the ntfs disk from a live boot. This is good for data recovery, but if you want to recover the actual install your results may vary see recent thread of desperation for tips. lol

Oh, well theres no OS on that particular drive, if thats what you mean. I suppose being able to fix the formatting would be the easiest solution, if thats even possible. If the data can be seen in Ubuntu, then I could probably just bring his drive to my computer, dump the contents, and reformat it.

GetDataBack is a fantasic app for recovering lost/deleted files, it has pulled me out of a hole few times over the years. i have tried other apps but GetDataBack is the best i've tried. you may need to finish formatting the drive to make it readable (not too sure about this tho)
it can be also found in the usual places

You don't want to do anything that will cause a write on the drive. And to recover anything, you need free space on another drive or partition that existed b4 the troubles.

I've used R-studio in the pass after a power failure during a format. Should only bother trying to recover files, you know the content of, like My documents, videos, music... programs and OS files you should just reinstall.

Try the ubuntu method in the case of no os. There is a pretty high probabillity that you can mount it.

Pirate the 'Active Boot Disk' - I've used it to recover a dozen drives, and the subsequent gay porn that people think they deleted (EVERY PC!)
