Where's that restart icon?

Postby multivariable » Thu Jun 26, 2008 6:50 pm

Does anyone know the where-abouts of the little green restart icon in XP?

Image

I can't find the little bugger. It's not in %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll

I've seen references to "windowsxp.icl" but that file doesn't exist on my HD.

Maybe it went to beat the crap outta the MAC guy...?

In all seriousness, I've seen this problem before...but alas, I nay canna remember. Real help hunh? But it is sometimes helpful to know that you aren't the only one.

EDIT - I found somebody asking about missing buttons, here is his remake of them anyways...maybe you can put them to good use...may wanna scan the file first, though they are just icons.

Thanks dude.

I realise I'm not the only one: there's no end of similar queries on Google, but not one useful reply can I find.

I'd already made my own icon from a screenshot, so I haven't yet looked at the zip file you provided. Who knows, maybe that one's better than mine.

Windows has got to have it tucked away somewhere though in an .exe or a .dll

I'd rather use one that's already there, but I'm fucked if I can find it.

I realise now that I should have posted this baby in Tech/Software Discussion where more people are likely to see it.

Would any kind-hearted mod/admin care to oblige?

Pretty please?

No problem! Consider it moved! :)

Why are you trying to locate the icon Mutli, has it gone?

Missing icons are usually as a result of registry problems/corruptions. It's likely that the icon is still in its proper place, and that a registry entry is misdirecting XP to its location, in which case, locating the icon would not help.

Last time I saw an XP problem with missing icons, it was as a result of damage caused by virus/spyware infections. I seem to remember it was icons relating to CP and Windows Help that were missing though. I don't think I've ever seen the restart icon missing before. :?

I believe it's in explorer.exe or one of the system files associated with it. You'd need to open them with a tool like Resource Hacker to find it.

A few of the solutions I read were saying they 'found' the icons but they weren't right...makes me wonder if it's not the pointer that got lost - but the file?

AH, who am I kidding, the files are rarely touched, and it's usually the pointing file or command...I do wonder where them peskies icons might be hidin'.

You can use a program like IconFinder to search your whole system (or specific files) for icons. It'll parse the icons out of any app or dll (or anything). When it finds the one you're looking for, it can tell you where the source file is located.

Just a warning, if you scan your WHOLE system, it may take quite a while, and give you ALOT of icons (mostly doubles) to sort through. (I speak from experience) It's surprising to find how many places things like the 'MyComputer' icon is stored within a windows install.

Are you using any XP Power Tools?
Maybe a Security policy disabling re-start?
Is it grayed out or missing?

First hit on google tells me it's in C:\WINDOWS\system32\msgina.dll

Throw that into resource hacker and it's the last bitmap.
It contains all the buttons in their various states.

It's not gone. I mean it's there when you hit the start button and get the Turn Off Computer dialog (as shown in the screenshot above).

It's just that I've created a restart button for my desktop or quick launch tool bar, but I can't find the green restart icon to go with it, just the red shutdown icon. It's really giving me the shits. I totally understand TorrentMama's OCD; it's got me that way too. :x

It's not in there, though. There's a round blue one, but not the square green one I'm after.

I think I'll just have to use the one in the zip file provided by Paladwyn, but I'd still like to know where Windows hides it.

Its not stored as an icon, which is what I expected after looking around for the icon last Thursday. Its a bitmap, and then windows cuts it up for the right image.
