Help me design a dynamic family tree in PHP

Postby 939841 » Sun May 25, 2008 1:00 am

Hi,
I really need someone to bounce ideas off on creating a dynamic family tree in PHP...
Right now, I think I am going to try having mysql generation numbers, and then hopefully I can used if then statements to properly space. I think I can connect offspring/siblings/parents with a single border-top/bottom/left/right element in the css. Thoughts?
Thanks,

define the 'dynamic' part.

like you enter a persons children on a page, it saves to DB, then the tree page queries and displays any new info? That should be somewhat straight forward, as long as your DB is structured correctly.

or are you looking for some sort of dynamic GUI for the user to input and make changes? Gonna need alot more than php for that :)

Its actually an entire game. There are different families in the game, and this will essentially be a dynamic script that can generate a structured family tree in a popup for different families in my database with different numbers of children, etc. I tried to find a script somewhere out there in my second brain, google; but the closest I found was phpgedview, which hardly helps at all.

Did you try searching places like Programmer's Heaven or SourceForge for ideas and code to get you started?

Don't know if these are the sort of thing you're looking for, but here's a couple I found with a quick search ...

http://www.tufat.com/s_family_tree_builder.htm

http://sourceforge.net/projects/phphamily/

.... there were lots more search results though.
