Looking for suggestions with a vista annoyance

Postby piglets222 » Sun Mar 23, 2008 12:54 pm

so the thing is, I'm having problems with the search feature... and I'm not sure what Im doing wrong, as you can see from the screenshots, I am searching "Everywhere" and including non-indexed and hidden folders... even selecting that specific creation date, from that specific folder it finds no results :(

but searching that specific folder for that full specific file name turns it up :( the problem is I take screenshots of my gaming say of levels I achieve... and name them accordingly lastchaoslv1, lastchaoslv2, lastchaoslv3... and maybe I want to post the levels achieved screenshots on the forum, i'd just search the hd and upload, but vista is saying it can't find these files... the first screenshot has one result... its for a IE favorite place called the ultimate chaos guide O.o

I have alot of graphics in that folder manually searching for specific graphic is a biiiiiig pita
why is vista not finding these files

I have looked around for solutions... mostly when you look they say 'oh, you must be looking in a un-index'd location' nope, theres the little check mark for checking un-index'd spots

The problem is your search term. You're searching for "chaos", so Vista is automatically looking for:

1 - filenames that start with that term
2 - files with content that begins with that term

Unfortunately, the files you're looking for are lastchaoslv1, lastchaoslv2, lastchaoslv3, etc. which do not fall into either of the above categories, and so your search comes up empty. Try searching for "last" instead, you should find your files.

This isn't really an "annoyance" as you describe it, it's how most character-based search engines work. For example, if you do a Google search for "uation", "equation" will NOT be among the search results.

I do indeed see what you mean... and I did as you suggested, which pulled up thos results... :( I am just so used to xp and when you put in a search term, it brings up any file containing that term...

and even tested it created two files called them, samplequestion and sample quest

you are correct it is searching for files Beginning with the search term... instead of files Containing the search term, unless I seperate them out into seperate words, thus if my graphics had the file name 'last chaos' it would pull them up....

is there a way to make it search for anything 'containing' the search term...

I remember in xp you just said tmp and it would find all files with tmp in it... well, atleast I have a way to better locate my files... thanks man

I haven't gotten to play that much with Vista, but what about doing a search for '*chaos'

Most search engines in the OS use * as a wildcard, and therefore would look for anything before chaos as well?

YOU'RE A GENIUS. Just tested that idea on my Vista laptop and it works.

Well piglets', it looks like you have your solution :)

Well, waddya know! Thanks! would have never thought of this one. Just seemed too obvious for Microsoft to have picked up on.
