ZoneAlarm is the best Personal Firewall for security.
But it tends to block too many things that you might need. I still use Sygate Pro which doesn't run on definitions, so you can manually set it up the way you want to. ZoneAlarm doesn't work with some P2P and file transfer.

Thanks. :D

I sit behind a hardware firewall and use the last decent version of ZoneAlarm Pro (version 5.5). Works great for me.

Kerio firewall updated recently. Sunbelt has owned the rights to this sofware for a while if I'm thinkin' straight. Why the update now after so long?

Maybe something fishy going on at sunbelt?

If not, Its great that a good and free firewall is being developed again.

I used it before but i think that Agnitum Outpost Firewall Pro is a lil bit more secure.

Only problem with ZoneAlarm, is if it decides to randomly not start (which it is infamous for, and usually means a permanent failure of ZA), you're screwed, as it modifies the Windows TCP/IP networking stack. Two ways to repair that: sfc /scannow (which does not always work) or reinstall/image restoration. Trying to reinstall ZA doesn't work to resolve this issue.

But... at any rate. Firewalls are way overrated. Clean up useless services that are the security risk in the first place. And keep proper control of your machine. (ie dont run thing you shouldnt)

I have been searching for a "professional" firewall/packet filter for windows xp.

This is what i found.
http://wipfw.sourceforge.net/

It is based upon the BSD ipfw and is highly configurable and supports spi. But you should know what you are doing since everything has to be done by hand. But it works great for me. Much faster than Agnitum Outpost which I used before. My PC boots about 20-30 seconds faster since I made the switch.
