You Drive me crazy. Storage is driving me mad.

It's that time again...
Summer hard drive buying season...
After doing a lot of spring cleaning I find that I'm still short on disk space..
about 10tb short... So I decided to go and buy some new drives to upgrade my servers.

I use to buy Maxtor but as you've possibly have read in older posts I found those drives to be
at best manufactured by the RIAA or MPAA to destroy your data that's the only excuse I could find
for a hard drive being that bad..

So I switched to Seagate... Those drives have preformed flawlessly for me.
But now, I'm getting brave and looking for something cheaper...
I'm thinking of buying 1tb Samsung with a 32meg cashe.. I can buy those drives for $170 each!
VS... $190 to $250 each for Seagates..

I'll be running them in a raid so the failure of a single drive will not effect my data storage too badly.
I just bought a couple of cheap storage solutions.

1) Data Robotics Drobo... http://www.drobo.com/ it's fairly cheap at $450.00
its just a drive case... just add any mix of drives to the system and it will automatically
format and setup the raid for you... No manual configuration, so they say..
One other thing about this device... if you put 4 1tb hd's in it.. rather than getting and expected
single 3.6tb hd... it shows up as two 1.2 tb hd's.. I was hopeing to save a drive letter, oh well.
The only drawback to this system is that its usb only... it would be a whole lot better if
they supported gigabit Ethernet...

2) D-Link DNS-323 2-Bay Network Storage Enclosure
this is a very nice little case with a gigbit network interface so it's a little 2tb drive case.
It's supports mirroring... I use it that way so I only get 1tb out of it..
I still don't trust 1tb drives so I will all ways run them mirrored or in raid configuration.

3) Ready naz... I've had this device for a while and it does have its drawbacks.
one, it's real slow.. don't think you can stream video from this device it's not going to happen.
two, it's real expensive. without drives its $900...
three, it's real loud... I have a closet down shares that all my servers live in.. if this was in your bed room
it would drive you crazy..
four, its real easy to blow away all your data if you don't know what your doing when expending drives or
adding or removing configurations.. so it pays to play with the software and the drive for a while befor
you put your critical data on this device.

4) Apple Xserver Raid
Ok this one is a little extream but I got it used from a company I was contracting for in lue of well
getting paid..
This baby is not cheap $8000 retail... it's 10tb... I only added it because soon as I can
afford the interface card for it I'll put it on line in my editing bay.. it's fiber channel.
You can buy the same unit from Promise Technology Inc for a lot less than the apple price and new.

Well I said all this to ask one question would you buy or have you bought a
Samsung SpinPoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB SATA II.
Ive looked around the web and the only bad thing I've found was when you try to
use these drives with vista. Vista seems to have a hard time formating or even reading
these drives.

Do you like them have they ever failed on you.. I know they are new drives but most
hard drives fail in the first 90 days of use if they are going to fail.

edit: never mind... I found I can buy the Seagate drives at wholesale.. for below $170...
Job done!

Amazing!

Well, the only things that I back up are digital pics and documents. Everything else is left for the electronic fodder demons to claim if and when the hard drive goes belly up.

I tend to back up my system drive (after last time it crashed and i spent months redownloading and installing programs) and some of my TV eps.
I will soon be buying a couple more drives, while to replace my 2 year old seagate and one just for backups. The rate cost is coming down and the sweetspot in price/capacity around the 750GB mark i will probably buy a few more over the summer.

currently frys is selling 750's for $109...

I can't loose data, most of the stuff i'm backing up is work related... gig's of rendered images.
programming projects, billing, Some porn and wares...

A disk crash for me use to be, oh well I can download that again to, oh hell I'm not going to get paid.

As for how much power I use? Well lets just say that the polar bears better get use to open water swimming.

Ready nas's price drop.

That's a little less than I paid for that case with no drives....

750GB 16MB cache SATA drive for $107.98

4 GB/s Fibre Channel HBA Card $99.99

They have some other pretty good deals as well, including building pretty darned cheap PCs.

Oh, the pain the pain... My a few days ago my readynas NV+ power supply blued up real good.
Turns out there was a defect in a number of the older readnas units caused by the use of
cheap capacitors in the power suppy. The caps leaked so under load they over heated shorted and
caused the blue smoke to excape... I have a replacement power suppy on order... but it's going to
take longer than I wanted because they are on back order!!!!!...
NetGear... whats the prob... you know about this defect you should have ton's of these on the
shelf for replacements. I hope the unit comes up after the power supply swap.. or i'll have to go
back to my back up tapes...

Well enough bitching about that... I'm going to send them a letter and complain a little more loudly.

here's a new product from Netgear the ReadyNas Duo...
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2280640,00.asp
I'm not happy that it only takes two drives but one cool feature is it had build in support
for downloading torrents..
