SimpleTech External Hard drive won't start

Postby sunflower04 » Fri Feb 29, 2008 3:13 pm

I just bought a Simple Tech Hard Drive less then a month ago and it won't start. The power on it won't come on at all. So it isn't just a case of the computer not reading it. would just return it to the store, except I have files on it that I need to get off. What do you do if your hard drive won't even start. I tried leaving it unplugged over night and that didn't work.

I keep hearing about putting a hard drive in the freezer. I haven't ever done that before, and don't want to do something that could completely ruin it.

I am not a Tech expert, so how you recover files if you have never even opened up a computer.

If it comes with a separate power supply ask your retailer if you can try another power supply. If it uses USB for power try another USB port on your computer. Have you checked the manufacturer's web site, they offer free tech support.

If you don't care about voiding the three year warranty and it uses a 3.5 hard drive open it up, check if the hard drive uses an IDE connector or SATA connector. If it does plug it directly into your computer.

Thanks for all of the help. I solved the problem. Both the hard drive and my cable modem have removable plug ins. I tried the plug in to the cable modem, and it works with the hard drive. so it appears the hard drive was fine, but the electrical cord with it stopped working. I will just call the company up and see if there is a way you can just exchange the power cord.

It connects to the USB port but isn't powered by it.

glad it's working :)

BUT - a word of caution. are u talking about just a cord, or a power adapter with a cord (the little cube that plugs into the wall, usually black) ?

if it's a power adapter, u want to check both and compare the output voltage and amperage (usually listed in milliamps). a significant difference can fry the drive.
