Partitioning a HDD w/o first formatting it

Postby bilong waswas » Wed Dec 05, 2007 7:46 am

Hi, I understand that it is possible to partition a drive "on-the-fly" so to speak, without reformatting it. But is it a good idea, i.e. is it risky?

Key worlds to understand are partition, and format. Partition does not mean formatted, and formatted does not mean used. Its ONLY possible to partition un-used space. After you partition space, you MUST format it.

You could understand the topic better.

There are some programs that do all the details w/o telling you what they are, so it appears to be 'on-the-fly', such as acronis disk director, or partition magic. In this case 'on-the-fly' only means "w/o a reboot".

You can not change the OS or active partition 'on-the-fly'. Or any partition with files that are open. They will require a reboot. The process takes a very long time, hours, a power lose during that time is bad news. Its a good-idea to make backups before you mess with any important files.

The software your looking for is PartitionMagic.

Use this all the time and works like a charm every time. It is a good idea to backup all your important data on the drive you are partitioning tough. Never know what may happen.

And if you want something free and legal, you can also use the GParted LiveCD:

It contains its own operating system, so you can freely manipulate your partitions. It also doesn't matter whether you use Vista, XP, MacOS, Linux or whatever, it will work anyway.
