Supreme Court to hear Kim Dotcom's extradition appeal

Postby MrFredPFL » Thu Dec 20, 2018 1:05 am

Story :

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear internet entrepreneur Kim Dotcom's appeal against extradition to the United States on copyright-related charges.

The Megaupload founder and his three co-accused - Mathias Ortmann, Bran van der Kolk and Finn Botato - were arrested in 2012 in a dramatic police raid and charged with a series of offences on behalf of authorities in the US over their roles in running the file-sharing website.

A series of appeals through New Zealand courts have failed to stop the extradition, but today judges in the Supreme Court unanimously agreed they had jurisdiction to hear one final appeal.

Lawyers representing US authorities argued the case didn't qualify for a Supreme Court hearing under New Zealand law but failed to persuade the justices.
