See here for details and possibly the position of your dreams:

I friend of mine who graduated with a BS in Computer Science got an $80K starting offer from them. He turned it down to work at a consulting firm in Dallas so he could be closer to his girlfriend who's in Med School elsewhere in Texas. Awwww...

Honestly I worked in silicone valley for 2 years, 80K is sh!t pay. Freaken apartments cost like 2K and above to live there. Houses 700K and above. That was in 2001 and 2002 but I can't imagine much has changed. Also to note CA takes a nice 9.3% of your pay unlike many other states.

So I've heard. For those who went to school in the southern states, though, $80 000 sounds like the world. Poor us.

You cant rent a house in the vally.
2 bedroom 1200 ft aparments for $2500 a month.
1400sf condos are selling for $500.000
2000sf house in a good area is $800.000
2000sf house in a crap area is $500.000
Smaller houses in a crap area like santa clara.
oh there 1400 sf for $1900.00.
If the gang bangers dont get you the cops will.

If you take a job at google right now and your
starting salary is not $90,000+ your getting burned. You cant buy googles stock.
The stock its $340 doller a share.. That means that your buy in price is 15% less than that. The target stock price for google is $350. After that there should be a big sell off. As all the old timers there fully vest and cashout there shares.

If you want a job as a programer then be prepaired to be quized on some of the most ass stuff. They will rake you over the coals and as far as 1999. you
wont be resting and vesting dont even think about it, they will work your ass.

The vally has not recoverd from the burst there are
still companys there going out to busness or just fighting to survive.
