php & MySQL Help!!!

Postby _eAgLe_ » Sun Apr 17, 2005 2:12 am

Hey Everyone... Well i'm trying to learn basic php and MySQL/SQL BECAUSE im going to be desiging a website, much like the setup of a phpnuke site, but i want to design it myself... I dont really know any php or SQL... lol...   Heres basically the things i want the site to be able to do, just the basic things, the rest i should be able to work out from there...

A) I wont to be able to post news articles into a MySQL databse, and have them displayed on a php site.
B) IM the only one I want doing it, so i need some type of login thing.

Any info or links on this would be GREATLY appreciated, thanks.
Basically it will be much like a phpnuke thing, BUT, MUCH more basic
PS - if some of my requests are ourageous, sorry, ive never programmed in php.

TIA, youve always been helpful in the past. Thanks so muchy...

PHP is supposed to be one of the easier languages to learn but I personally find it very difficult and you probably will too if your just starting!

You might be best using some something like phpBB like what slyck uses http://www.phpbb.com

If you havent installed PHP yet on your development machine I would recommend PHP triad, it installs PHP, MySQL and apache in one go and saves you a lot of fidling around. http://sourceforge.net/projects/phptriad/

Also get some good books!

Thats about all the input i've got hope its of some help. :)

Edit: http://www.w3schools.com/ is a wkd place to learn the basics of anything web based!

w3schools is a great resource site but in doesn't cover advanced topics.

You will need to create a registration script using cookies or sessions that will allow you to login and redirect you to a page that will let you post news. This part isn't too hard but you have to have a basic understanding of cookies/sessions.

Posting news isn't too hard either. You should probably start off by checking out some php/mysql books. You can find several online. You can also download a few open source content management scripts (CMS) and check out teh source code. If you do this, I would suggest downloading some basic ones since you're new to php.
