Firefox’s faster, slicker, slimmer Quantum edition now out

Postby bmh67wa » Tue Nov 14, 2017 2:54 pm

Story :

Mozilla is working on a major overhaul of its Firefox browser, and, with the general release of Firefox 57 today, has reached a major milestone. The version of the browser coming out today has a sleek new interface and, under the hood, major performance enhancements, with Mozilla claiming that it's as much as twice as fast as it was a year ago. Not only should it be faster to load and render pages, but its user interface should remain quick and responsive even under heavy load with hundreds of tabs.

In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.

Im a Waterfox user at this time, its at 55.2.2. I started with Phoenix, Netscape and Mosaic before that. This is by far the fastest FF has ever been but the update was devastating to the majority of the addons ive been using, some of them for many years. Some of them have updated to the new standard and ive found replacements for some of the others but quite a few are abandoned or just havent updated yet.

My biggest issue is that i like to sit in the dark so i use the on screen keyboard a lot but there is some kind of conflict when using Windows accessibility features with Waterfox v55+. Using it or even just having it open when WF is open will drop multi-process, at that point i have to about:config and reset a couple lines and restart WF. Ive been using the OSK for so long that it is just a reflex so i have to reset these lines quite often or browse like its the 1990s again.

Hopefully this is fixed in the newer versions so when Wf catches up i can get back to my normal routine. If not i reckon ill have to buy a back-lit keyboard again.

It hasnt been a painless update from previous version, we have a half dozen windows boxes in the house each with multiprofile WF installs. When i updated this machine i found that profiles were no longer accessible from WF, lucky for me that i have been doing this for many years and know where the profiles are stored. Of course i back everything up quite regularly too, just in case. I cant imagine the terror that a newer user might experience when having this happen to them.

Oh, i mentioned that i used Netscape and Mosaic back in the day because i had in install Mosaic for surfing the gopherweb, yeah i still use it. I could just install an earlier version of Firefox and run OverbiteFF but i expect that the moment i do this on each machine the update will come out and fix the issue. Waterfox is kinda stuck between 2 versions so 57+ addons arent compatible and the legacy versions no longer function or half function.

It was a PITA upgrade for me but it is so much faster that is has been worth it. Just thought id throw some of my issues out there for Waterfox users looking to update.
