RIAA and the Manolito Network.

Postby plumbpits » Thu Sep 02, 2004 4:10 am

Does the RIAA watch people on the Manolito Server such as piolet? Is there any chance you would get caught downloading songs on piolet like kazaa? But to mention Kazaa/Limewire, is it safer or safe at all to download movies off of the kazaa and the limewire network rather than songs (mp3's) off of the Kazaa program?

Thanks.
Mike

don't know about manolito. But gnutella (which limewire accesses) is vulnerable and Fsatrack (accessed through kazaa) is a death trap (not speak of the more probable computer problems you will run into when downloading from that network!

that being said, no network is completely safe. Look around the forums, you'll find various threads relating to your concern, and possibilities to reduce(mind, not eliminate) the risks. :)

To my knowledge no one has been sued for movies. Movie studios only send complaints to ISPs and probably the worst that could happen is that your connection is cut, but I don't think it's very likely that ISPs would kick out paying customers very easily.

First off, there is no Manatillo "server". I don't know where you got this idea, but the network is decentralized (no central server). There is nothing but mp3, windows media, and ogg files on the mp2p network, so that's why no one has been sued for movies.

The RIAA has gone after some users on the network, but not nearly as many as kazaa. one way to make your self much much less vulnerable is to check "ignore shared collection queries". this prevents people from seeing a list of all your songs.

There is already a beta of the new version, which will have much higher security.

There is a chance for this on all networks that make it possible to share mp3's or other forms of audio media.

Piolet is definately not a safe network ATM. It's users have been sued for sharing RIAA copyrighted music. But these lawsuits have been more focused on FastTrack. (Kazaa)
With the new Piolet 1.8.x Beta's, Pablo is implementing anonymizing features which are supposed to include ip spoofing and end-to-end encryption.

You can check out the Official Pillet forums at http://www.p2pforums.com.

Also, you can use a prgram called Protowall found at http://www.bluetack.co.uk/pw.html. It's an ip blocker which will prevent known RIAA ip addresses from interacting with your computer. Also, in any p2p that enables it, ensure that your have disabled the ability for others to browse your shares, as this is one of the main tactics used to gather evidence by the RIAA and its affiliates.
