File sharing car navigation updates

Postby tramsay99 » Thu Jun 13, 2013 7:27 pm

Does anyone, like me, object to paying hundreds of dollars for in-car navigation system map updates? How come google can offer an app for $1.99 that covers the world while 'Where is' maps charge $300? I found a torrent for my Subaru system (v18 c2), downloaded the iso file and burnt it to a disc. All went OK. But the in-car nav system rejected the disc as not being a map disc. Guess it must be a copy-write thing. Does anybody have a solution? :(

My solution is to use google maps navigation on my android smart phone. Via Bluetooth I connect my phone to my Pioneer stereo (bought it from Futureshop). Then I put my phone into the instrumentation inlet where the RPMs, spedometer, etc are located. Works great!

I avoid the dealership as much as possible, they always try to rip me off.

I love my cellphone for navigation.. but it does have one drawback.
If you don't have cellular coverage you suddenly don't have a map..
I have been burned a few times by this issues I found myself driving in the mountains looked at my phone and oops..
the maps were blank..

most of the times, I use waze, cop tracking, traffic bypassing, fast routing the best map app on the phone.
but for backup I always carry a real gps as well as paper maps in the trunk.
