malicious torrent sites?

Postby eclectica » Wed Feb 03, 2010 5:27 am

I happened upon an interesting article today and I don't know if it's old news or it's a new development. Unfortunately the sites in question aren't listed.

"It appears that for a number of years, a person has been creating torrent sites that require a login and password as well as creating forums set up for torrent site usage and then selling these purportedly well-crafted sites and forums to other people innocently looking to start a download site of their very own. However, these sites came with a little extra — security exploits and backdoors throughout the system. This person then waited for the forums and sites to get popular and then used those exploits to get access to the username, email address, and password of every person who had signed up." ... r-password

There are several mentions of this, all saying that only a small number of people were affected. Twitter was under a phishing attack, therefore Twitter is asking users to change passwords. Since this all comes from Twitter, they will not yet mention "which" site/s this is rumored to have been caused from while it is under investigation. Nothing has actually been confirmed yet as of this post, and the emails Twitter is sending are a precaution in the event the situation develops into something more.

Here is one of the articles: ... ng-attack/

and another... ... edentials/

This is one of the comments in the second article...
Not convinced at all with their statement because I use different passwords and emails for my social media profiles, I am not subscribed to any torrent sites and I got infected with the THCX spammy profile ...Putting the blame on others won't change the fact that they have major security issues, they don't tell how the other got infected and that would have been the only useful information ...Just my two cents !

Edit: Here is a Cnet article I found later: ... inesArea.0

agreed with TF's take on this. "you'll just have to take our word for it" is, as i'm sure enigmax knows, not a good way to convince me of anything ;)

put up or shut up, twitter. if there's a story here, TELL IT. otherwise, stfu. seriously.
