Masking IP while torrenting

Postby neonsquid » Thu May 14, 2009 1:10 am

I have a quick question for you guys, It may be silly (i'm not sure, I'm not internet savvy enough to know :D ) but bear with me if you will.

Ok so, it goes without saying that if you have a wireless card in your computer with a decent antenna you can connect to someone else's wireless network that is in the same geographical region as your computer. Basically what I'm wondering is this... Hypothetically, is it possible to wirelessly connect to a person's network (in your geographical region) and then to somehow connect to another person's network (again, also in your region) effectively running one internet connection through another, masking the original IP address (like a proxy does)? So, Computer>Local Network1>Local Network2>Internet. Is something like this possible, or is it totally absurd? Also, if it is possible, what would be involved in doing something like this (hypothetically, of course. )

Thanks in advance for your time!

usually if you are using a hot spot, you don't have to worry about routing your traffic b/c it is not your name on the bill which usually = anonymous but if you are worried about it see here: viewtopic.php?t=47194 it cost about $5 a month.

There is a free one but its vpn based so I'm not sure if it would work in your case but if it helps, that's good. You will need to use to translate from French to English. Where you sign up its

I just got my access code to and it looks good. It took me about a week for the access code. I haven't tried it yet though, saving it till tomorrow.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, Overnet User.

I've looked into pay services before (like proxies or VPNs) but I always felt like there was too much risk of the people who own the servers to log your information, or to keep records when they claim not to. This is why I was wondering if it was possible to mask your IP on your own, utilizing several different Local Area Networks.

If you Spoof your MAC address, and then connect to someone's LAN to get an internet connection, this effectively allows you to surf anonymously (If i'm not mistaken), but i was wondering if you could somehow then run your connection through another LAN connection, obtaining sort of a second tier of anonymity.

This is probably the kind of thing you are asking for: ... reless.htm

however, I doubt there is any way to hide your IP over it.

i sincerely hope you're not talking about torrenting on your neighbor's unsecured wireless. if you're using a business hotspot, that's one thing. but to use a private citizen's connection to cover your tracks to torrent copyrighted material is wrong. period. using their bandwidth without permission is wrong to begin with - exposing them to legal problems is far worse. don't do it. don't be a selfish jerk. (i hope that's NOT what you had in mind.)

Don't worry MrFredPFL, I do not intend to use my neighbors internet without their knowledge for torrenting (copyrighted or not, I know it uses a lot of bandwidth).

The idea I had in mind involved using a friend's LAN with their permission, but I was mostly just interested in whether or not the whole idea was possible (because I also know of a location that I frequent within the range of several free hot spots). I also wanted to see if it was possible to in a sense setup your own Proxy or VPN using similar methods to what i was describing in order to obtain anonymity while surfing the web, or torrenting.

So yeah, no worries man. :D
