.torrent files and all p2p protocols blocked

Postby SilverShadow2k6 » Sun Aug 24, 2008 1:21 am

Hi guys this is my first post here, and i really need help about this issue.

i moved to another place, an apartment in the college courts, and tried to use torrent but it's not working anymore, i can access all kind of torrent websites but downloading a .torrent file is not possible, getting it just like a text file (which i can download) and then change the extension don't work either, still no download.

i think that they are blocking any kind of p2p protocol here
any advice ?

thanks in advance.

Could I ask a question? Are you able to download the file, rename it, and then try to start it and your torrent thing won't connect?

From the wording of your post, it sounds like you cannot download the torrent files even as .txt files (renaming them and the extension), which shouldn't be possible for a college to block.

This doens't sound like a P2P protocol, it's just a normal DL / right-click SAVE AS.

Maybe they are blocking DLs from torrent sites?

Hi,

I had an ISP a years ago, which did the same. You could not download a torrent file, or use p2p protocols(it limited the speed of them to 0.1kb/sec, even obfuscated ones). The resolution was using a vpn tunnel(for example: secureIX, relakks). The ISP did not limit those protocols, so I could p2p with full speed.

I hope I could help.

Good Morning, and sorry if i didn't answer quickly i just woke up :?

I can not download the .torrent files, there is no way to do it except to go through a proxy or a Tor system but it's slow, and if i find a torrent as .txt file i can download it and rename the extension to torrent but still when i start the torrent there is no download it sticks to 0% i can't even see how many peers and seed and the tracker will not connect at all.

I think that i am connected behind a firewall system and they are blocking every .torrent file, and here is the thing i am connected via Ethernet cable and the phone line comes separately so is the cable, and the first time i started using the internet i got a page asking for a student ID, password and then they said i need to download i file to scan if my computer have the required security software and if it's up to date, then i got access the the Net.

That would suck, even legit downloads are cut out from that...

You really should black out those filenames...I'm sure a moderator will call you on them :)

actually it's not really a news group, but it's a board with high speed upload servers.

That's very interesting, I am gonna try some free news servers if i can find some and see how it works because i don't have the money to pay for a private one for now.

If you're sure that it's your ISP blocking certain types of traffic or sites, you could try the VPN route.

I can recommend SwissVPN. I use it myself occasionally, and a few of my customers who have opted for a very 'cheap but restricted' internet service (eg the UK ISP 'TalkTalk') use it regularly to enable them to bypass the ISPs restrictions, allowing them to use Ares, etc, which are otherwise very slow or completely blocked.

It's not free unfortunately, but at $5 per month (and you can buy 1 month at a time if you wish), it's not a huge loss if doesn't work (though it should, unless your ISP is also blocking VPN traffic or specifically SwissVPN).

I usually just buy 1 month (via PayPal) whenever I need it (usually if I need to download from a customer's broadband connection, since my own ISP is unrestricted). There's a test account if you want to try it first - but this is only to test that you can connect to SwissVPN. You won't be able to test your P2P connectivity until you purchase an account.

If you've never connected to a VPN before, the setup is very easy. The instructions from their FAQs are here:
Setup VPN for Windows XP
Setup VPN for Windows Vista

No problem. Shout if you get stuck.

One thing I would add (something that isn't in the instructions): For your own security/privacy, be sure to disable any unnecessary network services or protocols, especially file/printer sharing ones such as 'Client for Microsoft Networks' and 'File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks' - You really only need 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)', and possibly QoS, to be enabled. To disable any unnecessary ones, once you have set up the VPN, right-click the connection, choose properties, then in the Networking tab unselect the ones you wish to remove in the list (no need to uninstall them).

This is what the VPN Networking tab looks like in XP - just unselect everything but TCP/IP and QoS (if it's there):
