Strange - sometimes peerguardian blocks me connecting to me!

Postby ensign » Wed May 28, 2008 12:58 am

I have Azureus 2504 ( I don't like that new fangled bloated v3) and peerguardian2.

Sometimes my d/ls are fine and dandy. But sometimes, on certain torrents, peerguardian blocks an outbound connection from my computer to my router... destined back for my computer! What's the deal here? A badly written torrent? Or I am doing something funky with my setup?
I'm thinking, if I allow it, then my torrent client thinks it's connected to a peer when it's just connected to itself!

Any ideas what's going on here?

is the address something like 127.0.0.1 or 192.168.x.x?

if so those are loopback and router addresses.

It's blocking my pc's ip from connecting to my router's external ip (the ip assigned by isp).

But this doesn't happen with all torrents. I get plenty of torrents to work just fine, and pg2 does not raise a peep.

But occasionally I'll have a torrent that just doesn't work even though it seems there are seeds and peers, and coincidentally pg2 does this blocking thing.

Example:
external ip = 1.2.3.4
internal range: 192.168.100.100 - 192.168.100.150

I have bitorrrent set to forward on port 35000, and my pc's ip is always 192.168.100.100

So pg2 sometimes blocks 192.168.100.100 from connecting to 1.2.3.4:35000
...But not always!
Any ideas? Thanks

I wonder if the router is having problems decyphering between ingoing and outgoing ports. You say you are using port 35000, to let it through to your computer. Perhaps since you are calling for the port twice - maybe?

Personally I think the answer lies in the forwarding - be it ports or IP's or the router's capabilities to forward. I know with my D-link I used to have, I couldn't have the same port open to multiple IP's. Made it silly when you needed to open a specific port to allow WoW downloads through, I want is to go to 3 different computers, but D-Link says "sorry, only one IP can have that open port"

With DD-WRT installed - the sky is the limit there. I'm sure the port can only be used by one computer at a time, but it probably manages who gets it.

Is there any common element between the 'broken' torrents?
I dont know about PG2, any chance it can be overridden to send on a different port?
Am I the ONLY one who remembers that video KILLED the radio star?

that port is forwarded only to my pc. As for commonalities between 'bad' torrents - I haven't noticed anythign obvious. As for different port, I don't see how that would make a difference, since some torrents do work just fine.
