uploading on bittorrent

First of all, I don't use bittorrent, I use newsgroups. So I haven't kept up with bittorrent in a while, I know exactly how the system works, which is why the following makes no sense to me. My roommate just said he downloaded the latest official bittorrent client (is the official bittorrent client even safe or is it spyware?) and he said that you can actually disable uploading, so that you can only leech, he already got a cease and desist letter so i don't blame him for being greedy. But i've never heard of that before, and i woudl have never seen that coming especially ont he official bittorrent client. Is this true?

Thanks!

It is my understanding that uploading is largely neccesary for the process of downloading, and in the latest µtorrent I don't think you can disable it.

well i know it is, and that's what i was under the impression of, but he showed me the client and it had no upload speed on it, and the "uploaded" which was measured in megabytes, wasn't moving.

did he 'disable' uploading... or just throttle the up speed to 0k?

Nevermind, he disabled "peer exchange" which he thought was uploading, but it ended up uploading anyway. I"m not too sure what peer exchange is
