i mainly use newsgroups, and for what's not on there i use shareminer..but since shareminer is down i need a new way to get cds, i've always been skeptical of downloading cds off bittorrent cuz i just don't like the idea of being completely open to riaa/mpaa. i used to use pg but i heard that's shit now, do you guys download off bittorrent fearless with no protection or actually use anything, any encryption software maybe?

It depends entirely on what your downloading, what tracker your using and where you are in the world.
Very few people have been sued for using BT, but there is always a risk. Avoid newly released movies and music and be very careful around downloading programs from big name companies, as these have targeted BT users in the past.
Private trackers with a good reputation are safer, although dont ever pay or donate to them, since then they will have your bank details on record and if they ever get raided you could be located much easier.

If I had a $1 for every "Am I safe ... " thread ;)

Short answer: In absolute terms, no sharer is safe. In practice, you're highly unlikely to get nailed. Just remember to have the common decency to seed the torrent to at least a 1.0 ratio before you delete it.
