Stop Downloading Fakes and Junk From BitTorrent!

Postby Nutty-Slack » Tue Dec 04, 2007 3:49 pm

Many experienced file-sharers can’t understand why relative novices manage to download so much junk from BitTorrent. Fake downloads that never finish, video files which refuse to play, movies that require special players and unwatchable video are easily avoided by those in the know. But how do they do it?

Although it’s quite a small problem, BitTorrent is sadly being used by a minority to generate money for scammers through trickery and deception. We’ve reported before how people download movies only to learn that they require a special media player to play it, or others which come with a payload of malware to infect their PC when they install it.

Other people get other problems such as torrents never finishing or when they watch a downloaded video it turns out to be completely the wrong thing - i.e the file was deliberately mislabeled. Sometimes the video download is of such poor quality it’s simply unwatchable and of course all this adds up to a lot of frustration and wasted time.

There are many techniques employed by experienced file-sharers to ensure that the torrent is what it says it is and of a good enough quality to even bother with. We’ll look at just a few of them here.....

Maybe if the novices wouldn't be so quick to hurry up to download the latest and greatest, than maybe they wouldn't start downloading a fake! Also a little reading and checking wouldn't hurt at all!!

If people stopped being so patronising and "snobby" novices would be better served

I've directed bunches of people to Slyck and other sites to learn how to d/l safely and effectively. Not my fault if most of them choose not to do a little homework and read up on how to do it right.

Then there are the few who are addicted and now can't buy blank DVDs or hd's fast enough. :)

I don't think I've ever managed to download a fake movie? Even with the old filesharing clients a simple search by hashcode would show what the real name of a file was supposed to be.

Reading comments is always a good start - even on public trackers the fakes are ratted out!

people shouldn't be so snooty. Of course it's easily done if you're not experienced in this game.

And there is also the option of learning what uploaders/seeders have trust worthy content.

Ahem, atchoo* AxxO* atchoo*FxM* atchoo.

Besides comments, checking samples is a good idea.

And in torrents that feature .rar files its a good idea to DL just one part to check quality and make sure there are no "gifts". :tinfoilhat: :tinfoilhat: :tinfoilhat:

I like that feature of rar files too; sometimes I download something off usenet, only to find out that there are no PARs and most of the files are incomplete only by some little parts.

There's where rar torrents come in handy :D

(Just begin to download the torrent, stop it, take the incomplete rars and put them where the torrent files are, the just mark as "do not download" the files not needed and then recheck the torrent.
the client will then check those incomplete rars.

Start the torrent and off you go ;)

In a few minutes, i got to complete my incomplete usenet files hehe

Perhaps the new streaming BT video that Mininova is setting up will help this problem.

I agree those 'in the know' on these sorts of things shouldnt be too 'snooty' to help the novice users, we were all novice at some point... and we dont want to be stuck-up like those linux 'leets' ;)

But I find a huge difference in a new user asking for help, and a user whining that they get bogus downloads.
Asking for help shows the willingness to educate ones self BEFORE diving into something unfamiliar... or at least trying to learn from mistakes already made.
When a noob just whines about fake torrents and why it's "so hard" to find good files, they obviously havnt taken the time to educate themselves and just assume it should all just work for them they way they want because that's what computers do. By whining about it they hope somebody fixes thier problem for them so they dont have to read a paragraph or two to do it themselves.
I have the same sympathy for them as I do for the morons who get burned by spam email scams.

my point, if someone is asking a question, they might not be stupid, just un-informed, and looking to change that. Then we shouldnt be snooty. If someone is whining and wants you to fix it for them, direct them to thier Junk Mail folder and tell them to take full advantage of the offers within :)
Am I the ONLY one who remembers that video KILLED the radio star?

I had gotten a few fake files in the past and don't really whine about it, I'm sure if I had taken necessary precautions I wouldn't have..but hey, win some lose some (and sometimes the porn you get instead isn't all THAT bad ;))

However, since those early days, I now know which files are more likely to be fake than real, a few more steps to ensure and you are on your way. Usenet and Newsgroups are better for finding stuff purely that nobody really wants to spend the time to upload crap to a server and use that time, and if it does become bad...the operators can just rip it off anyways.

It's when a person who barely knows how to turn a computer on, comes up and wants to know how to burn movies and how to download them...you kinda cringe, it's not as easy as it looks. I usually tell such people that if they know somebodyt hat is doing it already, to let them do it for them. Let that person deal with the hassles, if they insist on wanting to know how..then I direct them to an appropriate site to teach them how to do it. Give them basics and try not to overwhelm them with technical mumbojumbo.

Where do you get your torrents from? It would be worthwhile finding a reliable public torrent site (ISOhunt now has a feature where people who have downloaded torrents from there can rate them to help others) or you could always join a private site.

The number of fakes that I have gotten has been so small it's almost not worth talking about it.

1) I just use common sense when downloading.
2) is the the file your about to download is it the right size.
3) is there comments from other users about the file.. is it valid.
4) is there too many seed and too many peers..
5) If your running peer guardians in reporting mode do you see lots of connection to that file
from p2p blocking companies.
6) Is your p2p application constantly throwing a file chucks of the file your trying to download.
7) is the name of the file your going to download named "Torrent filename", "filename Full", "Full version filename"
or "filename Full download".

Ya that seems like a lot of steps to keep from getting bad files but it a very automatic thing for me to do.

what would really help is if these people did 2 minutes of reading on the subject, they download movies that say stuff like dvdrip when the movie is just out in theaters. How stupid do you have to be to think that a dvd has already been made of a movie that just hit theaters.plus they use the worst public trackers,I no longer use public trackers but when I did I used mininova and some common sense and I got by just fine
