Wll they'll certainly lose all excisting contracts, and you can be sure that some other company will step up and say "we look after our email system!". Meanwhile Md can watch things crumble around them. Unlikely that any legal actionwill be taken because the info was effectively stolen it would seem, but they will have to totally change how they do business if they can convince somene to hire them ever again.

i also wonder wtf was wrong with these people....

they started a business based on pissing off most of the smart geeks on the planet...

and they were not that concerned with security...

i'd have been WAY more paranoid than they ever were. hell. i already am. and i dont have millions of people hating my guts. only hundreds. and they are mostly stupid anyway.

too bad the other media mafia pit bulls will learn something valuable from this episode of the war on p2p.

Just because you're not paranoid doesnt mean they're NOT out to get you!

oh my god.. they (MDD) also monitored their phone systems..

MediaDefender-Defenders proudly presents some more internal
MediaDefender stuff... more will follow when time is ready.

MediaDefender thinks they've shut out their internals from
us. Thats what they think.

The past 9 months we also monitored MDs phone systems. This
is just one phone call, 25 minutes long, with the New York
State General Attorney.

Spread it like the wind! Someone willing to transcribe this

It wasn't from yesterday. They mention the leak of a single email.

This is a very serious situation.

There are a couple of interesting comments that might make you smile at the start but then the whole tone changes and it becomes quite dark indeed..

MDD posted illegally recorded phone calls with the NY A.G office?

Wow

I hope they're ready for some serious shit and living in countries that do not have extradition treaties with the US. They have broken laws under the jurisdiction of a whole passel of federal agencies. People that actually do know what they're doing will now be after these guys.

This should be interesting.

hmm 10 rar files, first 9 are all exactly 15 meg. last one (part 10) is 5.74 meg.

For some ODD reason each and any one of them unrar to a mbox file of 695 meg(ish).

For some other VERY ODD reason any one of the mbox files decodes to the same number
of email messages with exactly the same content (6621 of them) for a bit over 700 megs in 'eml' files.

So, what are parts 1-9 for?
They are different 'packed' sizes but have content no different whatsoever from the last 5.74 meg file.

In other words, this same, exact bunch of 'emails' could be sent globally using the small 5.74 meg file,
or just as a plain olde fashioned text file.

Why have all these other files duplicating it to make a >100 meg download??

I call it a SCAM. No doubt to waste time and bandwidth for those who are interested in their Hollywood spin.

I will try another method to read the original files, just in case my software is broken, but I highly doubt any
change will happen from the number 6621.

its called a rar archive. you need all the files to be able to extract the file. try moving the 4.x mb rar file outside of the folder and extract it.

no scam.

aha! just did that and it broke.
I hate automation! lol

In that case, I now have some more juicy gossip to read. :P

and no, not a multipart one anyway, never seen a use for multipart since rar
can handle doing it up in one huge file.

The call, which sounds like it was recorded from BG's phone or his location, is from on- or around August 30 to September 4, probably August 30. There are a few calls between MD primaries and NY OAG office during that period which stem from this event:

(first response to this mail is on 8-30 at 08:01am EST, timestamp may be confused in first message)

B* 8/30/2007 8:44 AM

B* / J*;

I was reviewing the security logs on the server setup for your application this morning and came across some failed logins that I wanted to ask you about.

At 7:23 Eastern Time this morning, an ip from, what appears to be sweden, connected to the server using your username, made two failed password entries and then disconnected 4 seconds after the initial connection.

Are you aware of any of your people working on this project coming from a Scandinavian ISP and connecting to our system?

On that note, do you have a list of ip addresses that you would be accessing the server from so that I can update the ACL accordingly? Considering the nature of the information being collected, I would like to restrict access as much as possible.

Thank you.

B*

To which M* responds:

From: M*
Sent: Thu 30-Aug-07 08:01
To: B*; J*
Subject: Re: Questions after morning log review

Jay:

Is this one of your engineers? Because if not, this is very disturbing! Who ever this was obviously had the non standard port as well as your user name to attempt these logins. This leads me to believe that your system is compromised and/or our communications were either sniffed or accessed providing this fella with much of the relevant information to attempt access. As of now, all out side access has been disabled until we can figure this out further.

Please let me know what you have learned about this as soon as possible.

M*

This was an earlier breach, if you follow the situation with M*, you see that this was something much more benign than a all-hands-on-deck security leak like they have now, I imagine the ensuing calls were even more fun.

So the call was probably August 30, possibly August 31. Definitely not as recent as yesterday:

From: M*

Subject: RE: Questions after morning log review

I hear from Brad that we "may" have a solution to this issue? Lets have a call on this today! Let me know what time is good for all of you.

M*

MD was setting up a system to capture child porn that was known to be downloaded or offered by New York residents on the Ares p2p network; you can bet those plans have changed now, but the system was simple keyword searching (as referenced in the call and elsewhere), download files that also existed on computers with New York IP addresses, and then catalogue those files as to yes/no/maybe for child porn. This program seems to be entirely focused on child porn downloaders in NY. Someone wants to dig up the exact emails just search for "McCarthy" and you'll find where they setup the system, follow those emails outward and you see the internal chatter where MD lays out the specifics of how the system works, in particular there is a word document which is a data flow diagram (search for "visio w/ 10 word" in the mbox).

Also, I meant to add, here is the most likely candidate for the intercepted email that leads to this call:

From: B* B*
Sent: Wed 29-Aug-07 06:29
To: B* G*; J* M*
Cc: M* M*
Subject: Access to OAG Server

You should be all setup for direct access into our servers. For ssh
access, the address is 72.45.198.191:2551 - This is a non standard port.

Your username is mediadefender and the password is m3diad3fender

Please change your password on first login. I have granted this user
full sudo access, so you shouldn't have any problems installing your
software.

This system has full internet capability, so you should have no problem
getting any packages you need.

The system is a dell poweredge 1950 with 2GB of ram and an attached
MD1000 storage array mounted at /spool. Please configure your software
so that all original collected data gets stored on this external array.

As I mentioned yesterday, please make a log of all software updated,
added, removed from the system so that we can keep an accurate log of
the system.

That should be enough to get you started. Of course, if you have any
problems or questions let me know.

as yet unconfirmed but here's another file from the MD scandal:

This is a MySQL database dump from a Mediadefenderserver, showing tracking and
decoy file information for the Gnutella network. Thanks to MDD and Seaking for
making this possible.

Also Chobits music. FUCK YEAH!

AT - I mean, (?), theoretically, hyperthetically it could be grabbed anywhere along the way as it transmits through routers and different protocols from my end to your end, but I guess we’re asking: are you comfortable that you guys don’t have anybody in your email-server?

MD - Oh yeah, yeah, we checked out our email-server and our email-server itself is not compromised. I think that was your question.

AT - Ok, yeah, I guess that wasn’t clear, I just, I mean you guys know as well as we know that you guys are a major target of hackers.

The Bittorrent client is almost identical to uTorrent 1.7. Both our interdiction as well as MediaSentry's still works on Bittorrent 6.0. We were having some problems getting our interdiction to show up on our local machines, but with Ty's help we figured out that the problem was due to port conflict and firewall issues.

The only difference between uTorrent and Bittorrent was that the Bittorrent client came with an additional app called "Bittorrent DNA" (Delivery Network Accelerator), which acts as a local proxy. Overall, we saw similar speeds/performance on both clients.

Oh i love the way they are trying to crack TPB.. And another.

While Pirate Bay's image verification has been cracked, the processing
takes too long, and Pirate Bay won't accept an old code, so that won't
make it into any of the automated stuff any time soon, sadly. However,
BTJunkie's is very similar and doesn't expire, so we should be getting
that into the poster some time next week.
