Is WinMX a good alternative?

Postby CrazyGuy000 » Fri Dec 31, 2004 9:08 pm

I use both Ares and Shareaza so will WinMX be a good switch? Is it safe and what is it mostly used for? I heard WinNY was a new version of WinMX in Japan but is it translated?
Thanks for any help.

run them all, what would it hurt?

I am a newbie but am glad I found this sight. But to the question about WinMX I think it is one of the best filesharing softwares there are.I have used it from day one and I have never got a bad MP3.Not saying there are not any just that I have not downloaded any.I use fast track clients for software and other data files but for MP3's I always use WinMx for great quality MP3's.Hope my opinion helps you out.I would choose WinMx over the majority of fast track clients hands down.

I don't use it (anymore) but I would definaly recommend it. As stated earlier using all 3 networks (and others) would provide you with the greatest selection of files.

Safe: It's safer than BT, ed2k or Kazaa.

Mostly used for: Mp3s. Don't try to use it for big movies/games files. Mp3s and other types of audio files are what your going to find.

WinNY: I have never heard of WinNY, but why not use the WinMX client? Don't let the GUI fool you, if you know how to use it, trust me it's a kick ass app.

Are there any spyware or adware in WinMX?

Nope, no spyware or adware. Just a nice clean interface. (more of a learning curve than kazaa or ares though, what with bandwidth throttling etc.)

If you like it, keep it. If you dont, trash it. ;)

 Simply quoting network stats isn't a good argument. ed2k might have millions of users, but it takes an age to download anything, due to the massive queues, and having to spend ages uploading to build up credits, and so on. It also sucks for single MP3s, whereas winMX is good for that sort of thing.

1. stats that dont include WinMX aren't really relevant to someone asking about WinMX
2. if you are trying to say its best because it has lots of users... then you're basicly saying winmx is the best - with its estimated 4-5 million users (based on the assumption of around 7-8 secondaries per primary)

In addition, ITIC also officially removes the P2P crown from FastTrack and places it on the Donkey - the eDonkey2000 network that is. Ever since the RIAA began filing lawsuits last June, the FastTrack network has suffered significant losses. Before June 26, 2003, the FastTrack network easily topped 4.5 million users on a given day. Today it struggles to reach 2.8 million. However, there is some good news for FastTrack as ITIC states that FastTrack has regenerated to a modest degree

take a guess... i regularly monitor various aspects of the network for various reasons, although i cant get a very accurate count due to the nature of the winmx netowkor - that is based on an approximate estimate of around 500,000 - 600,000 primary users - although the fact that the WPN doesn't forward packets globally makes it extremely hard to guage so i wouldn't be overly suprised if frontcode came back with a higher estimate (although i would be suprised if they came back saying it was lower)

A lot of people drive Volkswagen Golfs (Rabbits in the USA, I believe) but that doesn't make them a better or more desirable car than a Rolls Royce.

Just my two penn'orth. I found WinMx pretty damn good myself.

i use winmx. i use it strictly for mp3s, always have. i don't believe it's any better or worse than anything else. just cool there's no spyware and is known for it's great selection of cool and rare music, great bitrates and the speeds are good. you do, however have to watch out for fake files. u can find out about them here and how to avoid them:

http://www.vladd44.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=4153

check out that site thoroughly and the winmx forum here and you should be good to go.

WINMX is "the best" p2p client if you're after MP3s! It is also the second fastest! "bit torrent comes first"

You can find everything from the rare to the popular.

MP3 then WinMX
Anything else then "Bit torrent"

Well call me the last of the paranoid brigade, but my WinMx activities are not all nicely logged and catalogued for the riaa/mpaa lawyers to sift through when the latest tracker owner caves in and sells out, let alone anyone joining into all the downloads themselves and logging the easy to see IP, addresses at a rapid speed
Decentralised is a whole lot safer, its a fact.
