New beta run on the way..?

Postby sumfuka » Fri Oct 08, 2004 9:14 pm

Looks like something is happening on the WinMX front according to the beta test info page.

WinMX.com wrote:WinMX v3.54 BETA
A new Library component replaces the Shared Files window. The new Library allows for much greater user control over what files are being made available. Rebuilding and refreshing is completely in the background on separate threads. Video files are now scanned for bitrate, compression format, frame size, etc

So give it 5 more months, and we'll have another update!

Beta testing on v3.54 will begin soon....

Points of interest:

- refresh / meta scan is totally in the background (on two additional worker threads)

- all compound filetypes can be customized from the settings wnd

- add folder dlg has been un-modalized

Taken from the WinMX dictionary of terms:

soon, adv
1) Within the next couple of years.

But in all seriousness, maybe this one is for real, as he has some screenshots available. Who knows...

looks like you can choose to unshare or share specific files within folders; I heart kevin hern. I hope he takes his time and makes a good product instead of rushing things and ruining it for everyone.

This looks similar to 3.53 i.e a minor upgrade.

It is a minor upgrade, but at least we know Frontcode haven't been spending the whole time sitting on their arses.
[code:1]char str[20];
scanf("%19s", &str);
if (!strcmpi(str, "Hello, world!"))
printf("Hello, programmer.\n");[/code:1]

Only the shared files window is improved, but in this 3.54 there is still nothing of important. How many years we still wait to have a working searching and better queue managment? :evil:

Oh no...every time I finally think you're gone, you return. :evil:
I must admit king, although I hate your retarted prick-ass guts, I won't start a flame war here.
Kevin appears to be handeling one part of WinMX at the time. What if he actually needs the Chat and Shared Files controls to work in a diff. way from what they do now, in order to make a new major protocol upgrade? What if he makes the upgrade without doing those changes, and all of a sudden the network collapses, or has major functionality flaws?
It's just like M$. Make a new component, advertise it like hell, release it, and then have to write hundreds of bugfixes.

I think minor updates is all winmx needs anyway. Once he makes the whole network search-able the que problem should improve greatly. I hate other programs that cycle uploads, like edonkey. Once I connect to someone I like to stay connected till the file finishes. And I don't want a bunch of new people ruining the network!

the client has managed itself great over the last few years, it doesn't need most of what he's bothering with - as is shown by its huge popularity

the primary protocol does need a complete re-write simply because its now having to handle several times the ammount of traffic it was designed for so it needs to be made slightly more efficient, but the program itself is fine as it is.
