In basic, how to get WinMX back running... (HOSTS file)

Postby Matt_MX » Sat Sep 24, 2005 11:05 am

So that everyone can get back online, here is a simple guide that everyone can understand involving the HOSTS file:
(this is what I did anyway!)

Open WINDOWS EXPLORER (press the windows button(between ALT/CNTRL) and "E" is a shortcut).

At the top of the window, click "SEARCH"

* Windows XP, then click "search for ALL FILES AND FOLDERS

Make sure you are searching (Look in:)"MY COMPUTER"

Type in the file name "HOSTS" then press enter to start the search.

At the end of the search, look on the right for this file:
WINDOWS XP
(name) hosts
(in folder) C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
(size) 1k
WINDOWS 2000
(name) hosts
(in folder) c:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc
(size) 1k
OTHER OPERATING SYSTEMS: I'm not sure, probably windows folder, but the file name is the same.

Double-click on it, then select NOTEPAD from the next window (you may be able to right-click it, then select "OPEN WITH..." then select NOTEPAD).

The file is then opened with notepad.
Now, mine contained only the following...
*******************************
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

******************************

You have to ADD the following, AFTER the last line:
(so, high-light, then COPY all the lines between the stars below here, then PASTE them into your HOSTS file.
(so you are basically ADDING all the following lines to your hosts file, except the ***** lines!)

When you've done that, click FILE then SAVE (at the top of the notepad window), then you can close notepad.

Reboot your computer.

When the computer has booted back up, try WINMX.

My WINMX, before the shutdown, connected within 10 seconds. With this modification, I must admit I didn't think it would work because it still was not connected with 30 seconds so I left it.
I came back an hour later and not only was it connected, but it looked like normal - loads of people queued, and files were downloading! So, I'm not sure exactly how long it took to connect, but give it a chance!

Good luck everyone, lets get WINMX back online.

If there are any updates, please post here.

More results...?

Postby Matt_MX » Sat Sep 24, 2005 11:31 am

I have many files of the same subject, so when I do a search, I am mostly searching for the same phrase.

Before: bad day=200 results, good day=550 results

Now: results average 700!!

I don't understand this!

*So what percentage of people have STAYED with WinMX and not chosen another file sharing program?
*What percentage have fixed the HOSTS file and got back online with winmx?
*What percentage of 'non-english' speaking people (IE, the Japanese - WinMX is popular there) have realised that WinMX is back up with the patch?

All this, and I have more results than ever!?

Anyone else like to share their experience?

Hi A-v-S

I tried your patch, but it reported "invalid filename", but I am using Windows2000.
Maybe this file is only for XP users?

Any chance of posting the updated HOSTS file information here?

Thanks,

Matt

Windows 2K should also have the hostfile in the

%SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc akaik ..
but the default %SystemRoot% of 2k is
c:\winnt

but since my program reads the %SystemRoot%
it should be working ... but still ...

can you check if there is a
c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc directory ?

andre

edit : or maybe the "ipconfig /flushdns" is not supported by 2K

Hi Andre,

I have just tested the revised program (version 2b) from your website.

The HOSTS file location is:
c:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc
(Windows 2000)

Still shows "invalid filename".
If you want me to try anything else, post here and I will try it later.
