Yes it most definitely is possible, although please check your web hosts terms and conditions as some of them are fussy about such things. :)

ok i need to be a bit more specific i think?

I currently run a room with a few other guys and we were hoping to run it via a online server that way we dont need to have one person witha great pc that dont need to reboot etc etc etc... currently we have to keep trading the hosting, but if we have a room crash or pc fault we lose the room, could someone please state a few more details of how to run the software etc. Thanks for all the help guys!!!

I moderate a winmx chat room run from a remote server. I don't entirely know how they set it up, but it's done like this:
The remote server runs on linux, and is running kde. RealVNC has been installed to allow us to control the server. We're running the wcs chat server through wine, while emulates windows.

I understand most of it, but I've no idea how they're running a graphical desktop environment and how they started RealVNC!

1. get a dedicated server
2. install and set up wine on it
3. set it to execute the server of your choice through whichever method you chose

personally i just set it to run WCS and auto-restart etc, by adding the following line to /etc/inittab

Code: Select all
wcs:35:respawn:/wcs/run

then in /wcs i have a run script which just contains

Code: Select all
cd /wcs
wine wcs.exe > /wcs/log.txt

thats making things a little more complicated than it needs to be, but is much more efficient on resources than messing about with setting up X and VNC and more reliable than having to manually start it

of course i put the wcs files in /wcs :-D

you can also just get a windows dedicated server, but they will normally cost you a load more, and you dont really need to pay the extra if wine will do the job just as well
