Sounds like a codec issue to me.
You could check it with g-spot to see if you have the correct codecs intalled. Or you could just make sure you have the latest xvid installed ( http://www.koepi.org/ ) and ffdshow ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow ) and maybe divx ( http://www.divx.com/ ).
Mind you if they dont play in vlc it could be something else that i cant think of at the minute.

It's extremely hard (not impossible) to have a video file that won't play in the latest version of VLC AKAIK.

The only thing I can think of is that it's rather mainstream stuff your downloading so I suggest using a white-list instead that is linked to on the left side of the site (Top ED2K Sites) and going from there to avoid any dummy files you come accross.

1) Whats the file extension on these "corrupt" videos? .WMV?
2) What are the file sizes of these corrupt videos? less than 50 megs?
3) Are the videos playing but showing large squares, where you can kind of see the video but it's all a
jumble of colored blocks?

If the answer is yes to all of the above questions then the the trouble is your downloading DRM protected videos.
before you ask, No you can't decrypt them.

If you use VLC player you should remove the other codecs with something like Codec Sniper.
http://en.utilidades-utiles.com/download-codec-sniper.html
FFDSHOW will sometimes run duplicate services. I've had it happen. Because it starts with the video and ends with it duplicates are hard to catch. Duplicates can be installed when codec packs are installed. But if you start in windowed mode instead of full screen then duplicate services can be checked. Also sometimes the settings get screwed up which causes video problems.
You can also use DIVXREPAIR to fix bad files
http://divxrepair.sourceforge.net/
It's pretty easy to save a file onto cdrw or dvdrw and check it on another computer. If it plays fine there then the problem is on the original pc.
