Is my ISP throttling me?

Postby toetag » Tue Nov 07, 2006 10:20 am

I used to get 1800KBytes/sec upload (20megabit FTTH line, 1800K bytes, not bits), but for the last week its been like 80KBytes/sec. I just fired up a BitTorrent session and was able to upload at 1000KBytes/sec. I am using eMule v0.47c [MorphXT v9.0]. It says I have an obfuscated connection to the server. I have to suspect though that somehow my ISP is throttling me. Is this possible? Any thoughts on how I can test this out? The fact that they let the (encrypted) Azureus BT traffic through makes me suspicious. Anyone else experiencing eMule throttling from their ISP... is this technically possible?

I have replaced my avatar with one of the retractable baton made famous by Anakata at piratebay.org.

So, its possible. Are lots of other people experiencing this? Is there a workaround?

Retractable batons have many uses! Here is the one I was referring to... http://static.thepiratebay.org/apple_response.txt

I upgraded to MorphXT v9.2 and it did not help.

Wait, they're throttling you despite having Emule's obfuscation feature turned on? Damn, score one for the throttlers...

You should probably try the official client just to make sure, though.

Well, my problem has vanished as mysteriously as it started a week ago. I guess it was just a problem at the ISP. If it happens again I could pop the official client back in and see both clients have the problem. Still, this issue of ISP throttling, I don't see why it would matter which client you're using, both clients have to honor the donkey protocols, and the ISP would see the same packets.
