RapidShare to Shut Down on March 31st

Postby sunnyd » Tue Feb 10, 2015 1:32 pm

Another file-sharing locker service is shutting down, this time it’s RapidShare, which will be ending its service on March 31st. Users of the site are being advised to secure their data as soon as possible.

In a notice posted on the site, it states:

"Dear RapidShare Customers

Kindly note that RapidShare will stop the active service on March 31st, 2015. Extensions of STANDARD PLUS and PREMIUM will be possible until February 28th, 2015.

We strongly recommend all customers to secure their data. After March 31st, 2015 all accounts will no longer be accessible and will be deleted automatically.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to send us an e-mail to support@rapidshare.com

Thank you for many years of trust.
Your RapidShare Team
"

RapidShare was founded by Christian Schmid in Switzerland, who also took over management of the company after longtime CEO and COO Bobby Chang left in April of 2010. In 2010, the site had hundreds of millions of visitors per month and was among the 50 most popular Internet sites at that time.

Over the years the site has seen numerous lawsuits as a result of copyright complaints going all the way back to 2007. Those issues eventually forced the site to change its business model to be copyright-compliant, and they also began using B2B cloud storage locker services in 2013.

It’s not immediately known why the site is closing its doors, but usage there has really decreased since 2013.

They shaved off the illegal contents like 5 years ago and decided to avoid the megaupload route and probably sent all of their customers to sites like Uploaded and Rapidgator which became popular for file hosting. Mediafire on the other hand seems to be doing OK.
