Surprise! Amazon Purchases Twitch

Postby sunnyd » Mon Aug 25, 2014 8:35 pm

We can officially put the rumors to rest now. In what many are considering to be a surprise announcement,, Inc. issued a press release today confirming that the company has reached an agreement to acquire Twitch Interactive, Inc., the leading live video platform for gamers.

As of recent, the rumors were spreading that Google was going to buy Twitch, not that Amazon was planning to.

In the announcement, Twitch CEO Emmett Shear stated, "Amazon and Twitch optimize for our customers first and are both believers in the future of gaming," and he added, "Being part of Amazon will let us do even more for our community. We will be able to create tools and services faster than we could have independently. This change will mean great things for our community, and will let us bring Twitch to even more people around the world."

Inquiring minds want to what happened to the idea of Google purchasing Twitch? Well, it seems that Google was concerned about potential antitrust issues that could have come with the acquisition, as reported by Forbes.

Google already owns YouTube, which is the world’s most-visited content streaming site, and YouTube already competes with Twitch to broadcast and stream live or on-demand video game sessions. According to Forbes, one source noted that because of the concerns, Google and Twitch could not come to an agreement on the size of a potential breakup fee in case the deal didn't go through as planned.

Earlier this month we suspected that the abrupt shut-down of, had something to do with a planned of Twitch by Google, but it appears that isn’t the part of the reason.

With all the rumors put aside now, we’ll have to see what additional changes may be in store for Twitch users as a result of this deal.
