Netflix Follows Through on Plan, Increases Subscription Prices

Postby sunnyd » Fri May 09, 2014 12:39 pm

Brace yourselves just slightly, Netflix has followed through on what they mentioned in their recent letter to shareholders, and as of today the subscription prices are increasing. Netflix has not yet confirmed the actual amount which is expected to be between $1 and $2 for new US subscribers, and the same for Europe and the UK.

In January, Netflix increased their prices for subscriptions in Ireland. At that time, existing members were allowed to continue their current subscriptions at the old rate of €6.99 per month for two additional years. All new members that signed up had to subscribe at €7.99 per month. Netflix stated they had seen little impact as a result of that price increase and they strongly hinted at the end of April that they were planning to raise prices either by $1 or $2.

Current subscribers were notified of the price increase in an email titled, "Thanks for Being a Netflix Member." The company stated that in order to continue adding more movies and TV shows it was increasing the price, but only for new members. The email stated, "As a thank you for being a member of Netflix already, we guarantee that your streaming plan and price will not change for two years."

We contacted Netflix about the expected actual price increase, and this was their response, "We are doing a slight price increase for new members of between $1-$2 a month, depending on the country. Existing members will keep current pricing for a generous period, generally two years. The new pricing will allow us to add even more great things to watch and to further improve the Netflix streaming experience.

The price change is happening today and we are informing members everywhere via email."

We’ll provide additional information as it becomes confirmed by Netflix as to what the actual price will be for new members.

Please do post a news article if there is a correlation of increased traffic to this website after a netflix price increase.

This is obviously their way for them to not lose profit after having to pay the likes of Comcast and Verizon to allow their service to run unrestricted. I'm guessing other streaming services will eventually be doing the same.

i really can't be upset at this move. Netflix has built itself a good library of shows and movies, and the price has always been really low IMO. considering what i pay for cable tv and i watch netflix a lot more than i watch cable these days. a $1 price increase is nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Agreed. I only watch the cable (reality show central) when my PC is busy, and park my brain in a bucket.

At the same time Netflix is raising prices..
Studios are working to slow delivery of tv shows to netflix.
"They say they want to give their affiliates more time with re-runs.

I wish I could find the news article I read.. but I can't.
I guess they think the harassment by content "protection" companies is working.
Because making people wait for longer for show's will just make people pirate that show.

For me, if I can't watch it ad free.... i.e, netflix, dvd, or filesharing it does not get watched.

I ditched my cable TV, just not worth the constant price hikes.

I don't stream Netflix, just do the DVD's. Oh, and any TV shows withheld from Netflix, well, off to the Pirate Bay. Besides, Netflix is full of content I can't find in the Torrents.
My God, its full of files!

Since the original story posted here is from May of 2014, I thought I should provide an update. ;)

In October of 2015, Netflix did increase prices again. The increase is $1 a month which makes it $9.99 now for new customers in the U.S., Canada and parts of Latin America.

Existing customers will have a grace period of varying lengths before prices go up for them.

The increase affects the plan that lets two viewers use a subscription at once. Prices for the so-called one-screen and four-screen plans are not affected.

The $9.99 rate, which covers Netflix's most popular plan, is the second time Netflix has upped its cost since 2014. Existing members won't have to pay the new price until next October (2016). So, if you're still on the old $7.99 plan and managed to avoid the first subscription price hike, you'll start being charged $9.99 in May of 2016.

By following this link, and clicking on "pick your price," the explanation (what's included) for each plan is defined:
