Against NSA Spying, Privacy Groups Urge Participation in “Reset the Net” on June 5th

Postby sunnyd » Mon May 05, 2014 4:02 pm

In an effort to get web users and developers to take additional steps to avoid the NSA spying, an event is scheduled to take place on June 5th called "Reset the Net". So far more than 30 groups including Reddit, Free Press, Fight for the Future, Demand Progress, Greenpeace, and the Libertarian Party, are planning to use June 5th as a day to spread NSA-resistent privacy tools.

On its website, "Reset the Net" describes the problem as, "The NSA is exploiting weak links in Internet security to spy on the entire world, twisting the Internet we love into something it was never meant to be: a panopticon."

June 5th happens to be the anniversary date that the public first found out the news about the NSA spying, as leaked by Edward Snowden.

The organized groups say, "We can't stop targeted attacks, but we ‘can’ stop mass surveillance by building proven security into the everyday Internet."

They have a solution to the problem and plan to, "get hundreds of sites & apps to add proven security (like SSL). Then on June 5, we'll run a splash screen ‘everywhere’ to spread NSA-resistant privacy tools.” The website lists what you can do right now to help.

The website also includes a video in which the groups say, "Governments are building a "prison" around the Internet,” and it also mentions, "But government spies have a weakness."

If you’re trending on Twitter, you can follow #ResetTheNet.

Against Spying, Groups Urge Participation/Reset the Net June

Postby sunnyd » Tue Jun 03, 2014 9:48 am

Just a reminder to all that this event is scheduled for Thursday. Several websites plan to participate.

Reddit, Imgur And Boing Boing Launch Anti-NSA-Surveillance Campaign

Some of the world's largest websites are planning a coordinated day of action on Thursday to oppose mass surveillance online.

The sites, which include Reddit, Imgur and BoingBoing, will be taking part in the campaign, called "Reset the Net", in a number of ways.

Some will showing a splash screen to all users, reminiscent of the one used in the successful protests against SOPA, the US copyright bill which many feared would damage the backbone of the internet. But rather than telling users to write to their electoral representatives, this protest will push more direct action, encouraging visitors to install privacy and encryption tools.

Other sites have committed to improving their own privacy as part of the campaign, by enabling standards such as HTTPS, which prevents attackers from eavesdropping on visitors. Such security standards are common in the world of ecommerce, but rarer for sites which don't think of themselves as holding sensitive information.
