Alliance v1.0 released!

Postby litening » Fri Apr 18, 2008 9:08 am

Hey guys,

After 2,5 years of hard work Alliance v1.0 is finally released!

Taken from the website:
"Alliance takes the best from BitTorrent, Waste and Direct Connect and creates a decentralized and secure p2p network. It is a private and secure environment to share files and communicate with people you know. Alliance works on Windows, Linux and Mac."

Alliance is basically a friend-2-friend network.

Here's an overview:

And here's the download link:

cheers

Alliance 1.0 is a pretty solid program. I found it much easier to bootstrap a small network than similar programs like WASTE and retroshare.

If you want to start a private network of a few dozen friends, it is ideal. If your network starts expanding out of your control, the client can get bogged down a bit with concurrent connections (one for each friend) and popup requests for friends to join the network.

Note that Alliance is not anonymous p2p - your IP address is not hidden from the people in your network. Rather, it encrypts all traffic (chat and p2p) to avoid ISP snooping and traffic shaping.

The good
* Easiest program of this type to convince your friends to use
* Performs basic p2p features well (searching, browsing)
* Fast multisource downloading
* Decentralized

The bad
* Large networks (100+ users) can get a bit unwieldy
* Strong encryption does not work (planned enhancement - weak encryption does work)
* Friend connection options could be made a bit more clear and interaction with user streamlined

Bottom line:
Very promising client - future revisions could make it ideal for many users

Yes, they are. And replying to this topic saying they aren't doesn't make it so.
