HOWTO: Connect to the original Napster

Postby slackerp2p » Thu Mar 06, 2008 7:42 am

Ever wanted to see how file sharing got started, or maybe just take a stroll down memory lane? Well, you can - with the original Napster client! While the old Napster network is long gone, Napster still works and has many diehard users - on underground OpenNap networks.

A network is only as good as it's userbase.

While in it's prime, Napster was THE place to get music, I doubt it's got the userbase to sustain a a very high completeness and retain a reasonable speed at the same time.

Unless this client can search other networks as well, I just don't quite see it as worth anything.

i think you'd be surprised by what you can get from opennap, paladwyn. however, that being said, the original napster client, for several reasons, is the LAST client i would recommend people use for opennap. the main 2 reasons are that it requires the concurrent use of a program called napigator, which is aggressive adware (if you don't have ad blocking, be prepared to be buried alive in popups  ) and it will only connect to one opennap network at a time. a far simpler solution is to use winmx. no patches are needed to connect MX to opennap (the patches are only required to connect to the peer network) - just ignore the "here be monsters" warning kevin hearn added to the opennap side of the client ;)

Sounds like a lot of hassle for something that you could get easier through Limewire, WinMX, Soulseek, Shareaza...or one of the many other clients out there free and easy to use.

I really dislike the number of fake files through the Gnutella networks, which is one of the reasons I tend to say away from Limewire. I've been updating my filter in Shareaza to kill alot of them, but alas...they slip through.

I find it funny, searching for "sdkjghksjh" and it coming up with "sdkjghksjh - Gone Wild!" or "sdkjghksjh gives blowjob".

In BearShare it's a snap to counteract those guys. Just put a few nonsense words into your keyword filter and then deliberately search for one of those nonsense words before starting the rest of your searches. The spam echoes back your nonsense word and is then automatically deleted from all of your real searches. 8)

sdkjghksjh porn is really good actually, especially in HD. Although the second 'j' is silent, in case you bring it up in conversation.

It's truly crazy what's available in OpenNap. These guys are music Zealots! But you have to share, or else risked being banned by most servers.

Hmm... might be why it's called file-sharing

Personally I go for the take-as-much-as-possible whilst giving-as-little-as-possible in return route.

Call it non-discriminatory thievery if you will.

I agree with Fred, as an OpenNap server owner that's been around since before the demise of Napster , OpenNap is a great resourse for stuff that's hard to find.

The old Napster client is great also if you only want to use 1 network or server at a time, I use it for administration duties while on the server, I've tried others, but I like it the best.

I wouldn't go visit another server using it though, instead I'll use WinMX, even though I'm not really a big fan of it, but it suits the purpose for the time and the little that I do use it. It's a resourse hog, but a couple of other good clients for OpenNap are WinLop (Lopster) and audioGnome.
