Yup. From the homepage:
"Alliance is a private and secure environment to share files and communicate with people you know."

This means you need to invite friends and connect to them. On the other hand you're guaranteed complete privacy.

Once you connect to your first friends it's possible to selectevily accept connections from their friends. This way your network of contancts can grow fairly fast.

Interesting concept - sounds like a social networking analog of sorts. Definitely looks a lot more user-friendly than WASTE, which is a pain to use thanks to the whole security key process.

Question: does Alliance support UPnP/NAT traversal on Windows XP?

That doesn't sound that bad that it's in Java, that makes it WAY more portable. They probably wouldn't be offering it for other operating systems if it wasn't. Anyhow it sounds cool especially since I need to figure out ways to securely communicate with my friends these days and I wasn't looking forward to explaining to all of them stuff about PGP keys and shit like that.

Edited to add: Whoa I guess I spoke too soon. From their technical documentation-
Encryption is a vital part of Alliance. Although it has not yet been implemented it will in the next release – v0.9. Encryption will probably be implemented using the SSL package in Java 5.0 (SSLEngine class).

Those screenshots sure do look nice though. I'll definitely be giving it a try on one of my boxen when it's got encryption.

Nice. You now have my attention.

@ tarp: Java programs tend to run slower and use more system resources than those written in other languages. Or at least my opinion has been poisoned by Limewire and the very capable Azureus. Nonetheless, I understand your support for it as a *nix user, which makes perfect sense.

Still, this is the only non-commercial program of its kind I know of that appears to be relatively easy to setup and use. I'll definitely be trying it, thanks.

Just wanted to let you guys know that a new version of Alliance is out:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/alliancep2p

Last version took like 15 minutes to scan my shares - this one takes more like 15 seconds. =) Other then that it's just some UI improvements and bugfixes.

Works kind of like in DC++..

I think I'll be putting this into test with a couple of friends. I've been looking for a decentralized private P2P for a while now.

Why restrict what its aimed at? Private sharing between friends. How about we all connect to eachother and share whatever the hell we want. Id trust the people at slyck to share good quality stuff.
