Begin - New Server - Site Migration

Postby SlyckRay » Fri Feb 18, 2005 6:29 pm

We have secured and begun setting up our new server that will host slyck. The new server is more powerful and has much more bandwidth allowance. We are very excited about ridding ourselves of the problems that we have been encountering for the past few months with downtime. The setting up and transfer process should all be complete by a week from today. I'll keep you updated.

Yes! Finally!
BTW, can you give us the servers's specs (I mean from both the old one and the new one) so we can compare :D

Schizophrenia is not uncommon for obsessive downloaders, espeacily "the Imagenes" on the WinMX network, who gaurd their files (and there are some who do).

I guess someone talks (or types) to themselves too (cough, cough).

Anyways this is great news. Slyck is always taking care of us.

Good to hear it, Ray. I wouldn't mind knowing the specs either.
[code:1]char str[20];
scanf("%19s", &str);
if (!strcmpi(str, "Hello, world!"))
printf("Hello, programmer.\n");[/code:1]

From what Ray told me a while back, I believe the server is running PHP 4.3.2.

That is all I remember.

Anyway, congratulations. It is definitely needed.

So I have done plenty of testing on the new server to make sure things are good and ready, and I'm going to change the DNS settings today. So slyck will be transferring over for the next day or two. I will keep the forums on the new server closed while the forums on the old server stay open til tomorrow. Then sometime tomorrow, I will close the old forums, transfer the database, then reopen them on the new server. So expect a little bit of downtime on the forums between today and tomorrow.

New server is 3.0Ghz, 1GB Ram, 80G HD, 1400GB traffic sitting on a 100mbs connection to the net.

BTW - Fooltank was one of my test sites, and it is running smoothly on the new server already.

Excellent news. I've only been here a mere few days but in that time I've noticed the site behaving with a grudge or two. Can't wait for everything to be up and running on the new server. Keep up the great work!

The new server will be much appreciated. I just hope that this will mean that old news stories will still be available and old forum threads will not be deleted so quickly.

Yesterday I was trying to research the Slyck forum archives for information about past events taking place concerning EarthStation 5, and once again hit a dead end because all of Slyck's forum threads get deleted after a few months.

I noticed there was a major surgery done on the forum threads late last year - about 2 years since the last drastic pruning. I wondered if server problems led to that decision. If the old threads were simply moved offline, then it would be nice to have them back for reference.

I don't know if everyone realizes this, but these forums serve as a sort of archive of P2P history that often does not get recorded anywhere else. Sure, many of the posts are just mindless banter, but let's keep in mind that historians put far more value on personal letters - often packed away in shoeboxes in the attic and rediscovered generations later - as a true measure of historical authenticity and completeness than they do on 'official' history books, which are generally a whitewash.

The saga of ES5 also bears this out: Slyck's news articles were far more diplomatic and less critical and condemning than forum posts - which despite all the trashtalking contained within, represented the only true measure of recorded events. When discussion threads are expunged there is little else left except memories.

Unfortunately most informal writings today are on computers rather than being put to paper, making it all too easy to delete a huge archive of thought in just a few clicks; therefore future historians might well find their work much harder.

I guess I strayed off-topic again. Anyway, thanks for hearing me out. :D

I couldn't agree more. Is there any hope for that?
