New Rule - NO SITE SPAM

Postby SlyckRay » Sat Jan 29, 2005 4:03 pm

After much feedback and consideration, I have eliminated the new Site Announcements forum and I am instituting a more strict policy that there is to be NO SITE SPAMMING on the slyck forums anymore. Any user who promotes a site out of context OR IN CONTEXT BUT OBVIOUSLY ONLY USING THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPAM THEIR SITE, these posts will be deleted, no exeptions.

Thanx for your cooperation.
Ray

I think it is the only way to go. IMHO; I think that we need a forum rules section. Something thats actually says "Forum Rules" posted as a sticky at the top of the forums listings. I know it would take some work, but it could save some time in the long run and give us something to direct people to that is easy for us, ourselves, to find. Cause I did not really think to check "updates" when looking for rules. But, it is just a thought.

Spam? I was trying to make P.C.'s point.
Seriously, I didn't mean it as advertising (even though that's not a bad idea.)

LMAO
Sure I saw it and I'm telling. But I do get your point. And that is what I think we should do here.

[edit] Ah but it was in context DB so you can put it back.

He means spam like:
Post number one: Well this sucks. FastTrack is getting less secure all the time.
Post number two: We can just use peerguardian and proxies to protect us, if we're gonna use FastTrack.
Post number three: Take a look at this cool site: http://www.somerandomsite.com

I see that you've disabled images in the signatures of people as well. Usually people are either promoting their own sites or their own egos with graphic signatures. It looks better without the graphics too.

I have a few questions.

Are links to sites in sigs OK?

Are links to sites in relevant posts OK?

Are links to sites like microsoft.com and google.com always OK?

Is it just personal sites that arent allowed?

What about broken linking - hxxp://somesite.com - is that allowed?

What about links in pictures?

Sorry to ask, but I dont want to step on anyones toes. :)

Hey Slyck good idea... i have one question though, if i was to bring out a new P2P program, would i be able to post it here???

I am THINKING about developing one, so i thought it would be better to be safe than sorry...

So would i be allowed to do that?
TIA

the point of this is that we don't want people coming here and using the forums as a medium to advertise their site. That will be the basis for all the answers to the questions.

Are links to sites in sigs OK?
If you have a special interest in a perticular site, we are not going to limit your ability to link to it in your sig at this time. I don't feel that it has been abused, and many members of the forums use this space to link to sites that they run or are admins at. As long as the font isn't larger than normal, we will allow this for now.

Are links to sites in relevant posts OK?
If the MOTIVE behind posting a link seems to be honest and sincere desire to help others and the discussion, then sure. If you run a site, and somehow you constantly inject your site into a conversation where it could possibly be relevent, but you obviously just want to plug your site, well expect those links to be nuked.

Are links to sites like microsoft.com and google.com always OK?
If they are appropriate, however again, if Bill Gates comes here and starts inserting links to his site all over the place (cuz he knows he can claim they are relevent in most cases) they will be deleted. Get the gist of this?

Is it just personal sites that arent allowed?
See above.

What about broken linking - hxxp://somesite.com - is that allowed?
NO

What about links in pictures?
pictures are in general frowned upon here, so unless you mean avatars, which i would consider on a case by case basis, I would say No.

Sorry to ask, but I dont want to step on anyones toes. Smile

Thanx for asking. :)

@IlL-eAgLe: When our members make websites, we don't have a problem with them putting a link in your sig. That is better than in a post anyway. (BTW - we do have a problem when members who we don't know do this so beware, if you have a low post count or we don't know you - I would wait to start linking to your site)

I thought the Site Announcements forum was a good idea. It would have given people who create torrent or ed2k link sites an opportunity to advertise their Website in a manner which wouldn't disrupt this Website.

Cool.
No more "I made this site http://spamincoorporated.org , come to get a free ipod" or "I need your help, come and click my banners a few times to get my site going"
And these really happen...
