RSS and/or Atom feeds for the forum sections/threads

Postby Toasty » Thu Sep 08, 2011 5:56 pm

Topic kinda says it all, but this would be an awesome addition for those of us who subscribe to RSS feeds and can't always visit the forums each day. There are a few mods for phpBB that provide this behavior, so in theory I wouldn't think it would be too big of a pain to add.

Hey Toasty,

Sorry, I did see your first post, and I intend looking into it ... just haven't had time yet.

Sounds like a good idea. You got links to any of the mods you've seen? :)

Disclaimer: I've never run phpBB myself or tested the following mods, and since web development is something I only dabble in, I'm not fit to authoritatively say whether they are safe/suitable.

There were several that I saw when searching for "RSS" on the phpBB mod database. I think the most promising-looking one that I've seen (from the standpoint of documented features) is Simple Syndication. Seems to have all the bells and whistles a user would need to tailor the feed he wants.

Thanks. :)

Ok, I think I found another (possibly better) way ...

I've enabled feeds for all forums now. Your browser should detect them all. For specific sections/threads, browse to the section/thread first.

Let me know if it works ...

Working brilliantly! Was there something already built into phpBB? (If so, that's even better!) Thanks!

Turns out the function was added to phpBB in a very recent update. It just wasn't enabled or configured :)

There seems to be a little glitch with the News feed. All the various news sections' threads seem to show up nicely, but whenever a new thread gets started in General Discussion, it shows up in the News feed too. (Not sure if any of the other less active forum sections might also have their new threads erroneously show up in that feed as well. Not gonna spam them to find out. :P)

I think I can see why ...

I've changed the settings a little. Let me know if that's any better ...

Looks like all is well now. Another new thread was posted in General File Sharing Discussion and it didn't show up in the news feed. Thanks!
